Carved All Stone Walrus Figurine Up for sale. Is this vintage carved, all stone sculpture of a stylized walrus. The body is made of mottled, serpentine stone. The tusks are stylized, overly accented, white quartzite stone. Other such figurines use soapstone and marble for the tusks. The effect is perfectly charming. This figure measures about 4" long. It is in very good condition with a few tiny impact marks on the back. Nothing serious. Nor does this detract from the display. These figurines were mass produced, once plentiful and popular back in the 1970's and 1980's. The original design may have come from Eskimo artists but was then copied, machine made by a template, and distributed to gift shops across America. Antique Walrus Tusk Salt and Pepper w/ Penguins possibly from Alaska (?)
Just recently acquired from a nice old estate-here are what I'm assuming are walrus tusk salt and pepper shakers. With tusk penguins attached to them. The shakers appear to have their original corks, and show signs of use. Note the cracking around the holes at the top, which if I understand correctly can occur with tusk material. These are clearly old, and came from an estate that had many items from the 1890s through 1940s. I'm guessing they might have been bought as souvenirs on a trip to Alaska or upper Canada. The shakers are quite attractive, well smoothed, and show aging. For sale ONLY in the USA, and not outside the USA. Buyer to pay the cost of shipping, which is $3.50 in the USA. This intrically carved needle case came with a note(included in the listing) indicating that it came from Archangel. Russia. This town has long been known for its walrus carving industry. I do not know with certainty the material it is carved from, possibly faux walrus tusk. The condition is good although not pristine. I estimate it is about 100 years old. There are a few hairline cracks. The top screws on only at a precise position in a dry environment such as mine. When I lived in a more humid climate. The top held in place tighly.
