Through my research I have found out that this company only made these whistles between 1870 and 1890 for the US Navy(which is around the time of the Spanish American War. Because of the time period. Boatswain Bo’ swain Sterling Whistle Cord Lanyard USS Kennedy CV67 Named Vet
This sale is for a sterling silver boatswain whistle from the estate of a vet who served aboard the USS Kennedy CV67 during his career. USS Kennedy memorabilia is highly sought after and a named boatswain’s whistle is right up on top for desirability. First a little research. This sterling silver whistle is marked“sterling” and has the TTC Logo for The Thomae Company of Attleboro. Mass and founded in 1920, who produced silver whistles for a number of years. Although they had produced whistles previously, around WWII, the Thomae Company received a large US Navy contract order for whistles in the 1970s, making them official US Navy items. This whistle is personalized with the marks. W. Johnson BM3” on one side and“U.S.S. J.F.K CV67” on the other. A little research turned up a Willie Johnson who served aboard in 1975-1976 as a boatswain. There ... moreis also a reference to an Andrew William Johnson Jr. BM3, a Vietnam era vet who may also be the same person, who is indicated to have been crew 1975-1977, who passed away in 2008. Condition: the sides of the pipe are dimpled. See photos and the sterling dark. Has original, hand plaited boatswain’s navy neck cord, made of navy nylon. The cord has some fading, pulling and a loose cord. I have not done any attempts to repair, clean or restore this item. It is original, dark and salty from use aboard the USS Kennedy. It is difficult to find named boatswain’s pipes, especially connected with a vessel and original cord. Sterling boatswains whistles are scarce enough. But to find one that had a navy contract associated with it is great. Then on top of that it is named and the ship identified; to make it even better is a local, ship-made lanyard for the whistle. You really can’t get more detail than that, outside of a photo of the guy wearing the whistle(which I don’t have) I am starting this off at $185 for the whistle and the lanyard together for the same price. But this item is an exception. As a young woman in 1973, I went to New York for the first time and visited Tiffany's. The New York store was the only store at that time. My boyfriend had been in the Navy and I decided to buy this whistle because of him. When I brought it home, he admired it and played a few calls on it. I put it on a chain and wore it once or twice. But I broke up with him a year later and this whistle has sat in my jewelry box ever since. It is in excellent condition. No nicks or dents or major scratches. This Bosun's Pipe must have been a retirement gift for the Submarine Service Master Chief Machinist Mate whose name is engraved on the pipe. His career spanned 29 years. From Jan 1960- Aug 1989. Needs some cleaning The sterling silver is tarnished Item Still works Item Info: 1940 Boatswain pipe from the USS Arizona which was sunk at Pearl Harbor. Hawaii, December 7th, 1941. This item was passed on from a survivor of the Arizona in May of 1946 at the Anchor Bar on hotel circle in Honolulu. How I got the Item: I first met Mike. The owner of the pipe, at the Sub Base enlisted mens' club at Pearl Harbor after being invited to a birthday bash. I was with a local girl name Vicky Clark; I found out that she was a long time live-in girlfriend of Mike who later on that night informed me that she was his girl. He further told me that he and she hung out at a local bard on Hotel Street and to come by with my buddies for some drinks. I later found out ... morefor Vicky that Mike was from New Jersey, he was a survivor of the 1941 sinking of the USS Arizona. And lived with her on the Island since his separation from the navy two years prior and in addition, he had no family to go home to. A few days later a buddy and I arrived at the Anchor Bar which on that night, Mike took the pipe out of his aloha shirt pocked and offered it to me in exchange for buying him a few drinks and not asking his girl for a date. The dog tag on the chain was put on by me later for ID purposes. I hung it in my locker and just left it there until I got married and left the Island. The rest is history. Boatswain's Call Vintage Whistle In Box Royal Navy History Pamphlet
This is a vintage Boatswain's Call or whistle. It is 5 inches long and the chain is 30 inches long. The whistle is made of brass and the chain is just a plain gold metal. There is a pamphlet that explains the history. Use and respect the whistle is used for. The booklet is 4 pages(2 front and back) It comes in its original box. The whistle shows some use and wear but overall in very good condition. There are no rips or tears to the booklet. The box has two areas where the top layer of paper has been removed, like when you peel tape off of a box. The box is intact though, but there is wear overall. Here is a no-name Copper& Brass Bosuns whistle. 4.5in long. it looks old. But I have no idea. It has a couple(2) very light dings, and a slight bend in lanyard fin.
