Even though Switzerland wanted to remain neutral Supplying the US with vital items such as these movements seemed to be no problem for them. This chronograph seems to run very strong. The up/down indicater works properly. It sits in its original 6" x 6" wood box. there is no key to the box) The s/n of the movement is 6411710 and from what I can determine this puts it at approx. 1942. There are 3 condition issues that I know of. 1) The sweep second hand looks to be repaired You may be able to see in the pics that about half-way it looks like it was rejoined where it may have been broken, I am unsure exactly what may be the case as this is the way it was when I acquired it. 2) the thing that holds the box top from falling back needs to be re installed, there is 1 screw missing and the brass plate needs to be flattened out. 3) the movement cover on the bottom side which is the weight that makes it gimbal properly is missing. And of course the missing key which I already mentioned. So with the downsides out of the way lets review the positive, Rare! Movement looks great and runs great! Power indicater works correctly! This great World War Two watch has many markings which are all shown in the pictures. The inside movement says Hamilton Watch Co. Model 22-21 Jewels Adj. to temp. 6 pos. Made in USA. U. S. Navy- BU. Ships 1943. There is also a number down lower that says, 2F24452. The inside of the cover is numbered 183676. There are also alot of numbers on the outside of the case which are shown in the picture. Bulova Accuquartz 224 Navigator Mark III Boxed Ship Chronometer(1973)
This is a chronometer made by Bulova in the 1970's. It uses the caliber 224 movement which was a variant of the 218 dual tuning fork movement. However rather than use the tuning fork for timing, the Accuquartz movement had a quartz oscillator and chip generating a frequency of 32.768Hz and it used the tuning fork, pawl, and index wheel just as an engine to run the train. The result was a rugged and very accurate timekeeper that was perfect for a marine chronometer. The movement is housed in a heavy brass case that is gasketed to make it water resistant. The case has a cir-clip spring on the bottom so it snaps into the box, and it has a protective Lucite cover; the cover has some light swirl scratches. As seen in the photos, the box is covered with laminate, and the glue on the edges has dried a bit, so the laminate is not attached firmly ... moreat some corners; as seen in the near corner of photo#1, it is easy to re-glue. The watch-based chronometer has a hacking feature that stops the second hand when the crown is pulled up for precision timing. The day/date movement is in very good working condition. It keeps excellent time. The box is a 4-3/4in cube and weighs about 4-1/2 pounds. It has brass drop handles that stay in place when raised and a brass catch and hardware. For sale is a nice ships’ chronometer from the 1960s and used on Russian ships or submarines. The chronometer and boxes are in good condition with the only negative being a few scratches. Finish loss, and holes(I don’t think these are original and probably there to attach) on the outer box. The boxes open and close as they should. The chronometer dial is good and backed with a beautiful movement that runs well and for the full 56 hours. The outer box is 9 ¾” tall. Wide, and deep and the inner box is 8” high X 7 1/2” X 7 ½” The dial is about 4” in diameter. This is a great marine chronometer with no known problems. Russian Marine Ship Chronometer Poljot Submarine #16472 USSR Soviet Union CCCP
My Russian is a little rusty. But from looking at another chronometer I found on the net just like this one, the manufacturer appears to be"Poljot" The velvet bag has missing buttons and some broken button loops but is otherwise intact with no rips or holes in the fabric. The outer box has a great finish and is very shiny, it has a couple of small dings to the corners in back. The leather strap is worn but not dried out. The inner box looks excellent from top to bottom. Now let me say up front that I'm no expert on chronometers. But I will provide as much information as I can and will be happy to answer questions from bidders or provide more information, just click"ask a question" at the bottom of the page, before you make a bid. The chronometer hands do not move when the watch is wound. I know it's not advised ... moreto wind these up very much so I only wound it a few turns to see it I could get any movement. Which I could not. The glass face and the brass overall appear to be in very clean good condition. There are a couple of dents and nicks in the brass on the underside, hopefully they are visible in the pics. The hands look very slightly bent. The face is very clean and bright white. The mount appears to be sturdy and still very well fastened. The underside has a spring loaded panel that rotates to reveal the winding key hole. There are two keys in this auction, one that appears correct and another that may go to a different chronometer but it is included. The big weighted wheel inside moves freely and gracefully moved back and forth when I was taking pictures of the insides. The serial number on the face and on the inside both match, 16472. Again. POLJOT Russian ship's marine chronometer: Year made 1960's Manufacturer and/or fabrication by: East Germany Glashutte[same chronometer is made for WEMPE-Hamburg] Serial# on the dial and markers of the maker: 18650[on the dial] Details: Free sprung Helicoidal hair spring w/ balance wheel mono-metallic with large screws on either end for timing. It is a 2 days Fusee clock, chain driven, the workin gs of the clock are half-seconds DEAD BEAT tempo- with exceptional pictures available for you to see of the ge neral quality of the beautifully gilded bridges and large stainless steel polished scre ws there are to hold the bridges in place. The clockmaker that serv iced this mariner chronometer clock is one of the best in Victoria B.C. and has written several books. He opined that the'chronometer tim ing' is still maintained. But ... moredue to the mono-metallic bal ance wheel. Sometimes there are 10-12 seconds of variations between the winter and summer months. There is no escaping this fact. The fabricator of course today is virtually unkno wn. Lots of these clocks are on e-Bay right now, but none so beautiful, and fully serviced! So. Vintage Chelsea Chronometer In Maritime Wooden Box/Ship's Clock, Made In Germany
This is a vintge maritime ship's clock made by Chelsea. It is labeled"Chelsea- quartz- chronometer" The dimensions are 6" in length. 6" in width, 4" tall. The timepiece's face plate is made of heavy glass and solid brass. Brass is also utilized throughout the hardware on this piece. All hardware is present and intact. The box is solid wood. I believe that it is mahogany. There is a brass monogram plate located inside the top lid of the box. It has no inscription on it. I have not polished the brass. Nor cleaned the wood. The poece is as I found it. Potential buyers may determine to clean or display piece as is. The time piece works. It uses two C batteries(not included) The iside of the piece displays that it was made in Kienzle. Germany. U.S. Navy WWII Ship's Chronometer - Hamilton Model 22 In Original Gimbal Case
Up for action is a fine example of the famous World War II Hamilton Watch Companies Model 22 United States Navy Ship's Chronometer. This chronometer runs perfectly and all functions work as they should. There is a wealth of historical and technical information about this fine timepiece on the Internet. So I won't make a long story of it here. Suffice to say this chronometer still maintains the same accuracy it did on it's included 1968 Certificate of Accuracy from Southwest Instrument Co. of San Pedro, California. I have tested this chronometer against the U.S. National Bureau of Standards(WWV) and it still maintains it's constant 5/10's second per day gain. No attempt has been made to restore the finish of any of the brass parts or the box's finish, as I feel the original brass patina and aged wood add to it's ... moreauthenticity and character. The decision to refinish or not I leave up to the new owner(it really doesn't need it) As the photos will show, the dial plate is in as perfect condition as can be for a clock of this vintage and it is simply beautiful. Besides the 1968 certificate of accuracy I am also including a CD ROM of the entire original U.S. Navy repair manual and parts catalog for the Model 22(size 35) Per the Hamilton shipping instructions(on a sticker on the inside bottom of the wooden case, the clock portion will be removed from it's gimbal and shipped in a separate box along with the wooden case in a separate box, and both boxes then put inside a third box with extra packing. Lastly, and I think of interesting historical significance; for the past forty plus years, this chronometer was owned by one-half of a very famous 1960's TV"brother" comedy duo. Early World War I era American ship's deck clock/watch made by the“Elgin National Watch Co” It is the“Father Time” model as is inscribed on the movement. It is an 18 size free sprung lever watch with a minute chapter at the 5's. A sunken seconds dial is at 6 o'clock and a wind indicater dial is at the 12 marked 0 up to 40. The dial is surrounded by a bright brass reflector ring and is protected by a thick beveled crystal. The damascened nickel movement has 21 jewels housed in gold bezels. The bi-metallic balance has gold timing weights and is“free-sprung. meaning it doesn't need the fast slow levers. Underneath the balance is the signature“Elgin Watch U.S.A. The backplate of the movement is also marked“Father Time Elgin Ill, U.S.A. with serial number 21,869,262, 21 ... moreJewels, Safety Barrel, Adjusted 5 Positions. It is a lever set clock with the lever at the 2 o'clock at the edge of the dial. The piece sits in gimbals to keep it running upright at sea. There is also a heavy brass counterweight that screws into the back to keep it level. Nothing is inscribed on this piece so this particular clock was probably a private purchase. The brass gimbal has a locking lever at the right rear and is mounted in the original 3-tier solid mahogany chronometer box with brass hardware. Has the original brass lock with functional keys that are hallmarked The Eagle Lock Company Terryville CT. Locks shut as it should and one key fits. The other must be for the outerbox which is NOT included. The second tier has a glass top for viewing and is held open by a brass lid hinge on the left. The front bears an inlaid brass plaque reading“ELGIN. The box measures 5 1/4 inches square and 5 1/4 inches high. All it's parts appear to be original including the crystal. Antique 1800s Ship Chronometer Dent London 'Maker to the Queen' No. 45594
Featured here is an 1800s ship chronometer made by Dent(James Edward. I believe) of London. It is a solid piece and appears to be missing a couple of hands. I've been told it dates to the 1860s, but cannot verify that. Serial# is noted. It weighs 4 lbs and 2 ounces. It is 5" in diameter and 3" in height. This is an excellent piece from my personal collection. I do not part with these often. But would like a little extra cash. This has been serviced by one of the best, Dean S. Sarnelle from"Once Upon a Time" Please note that the clock itself has been polished somewhat as each time they were serviced by the military. Generally they were given a quick wipe down. However, since they were removed from the gimbaled mount and sent off for service in the metal shipping containers, the rest of the gimbal for the most part was left as is. As you can see, the rest of the gimbal mount has a beautiful patina that has not been touched over the years. This shows the age ... moreof the piece quite well. I refuse to take the gimbal out and ruin this patina by polishing it. However, if you are the lucky bidder, you may take it out and spend 10 minutes with Brasso and make it look as shiny as you wish. Most serious collectors prefer to leave them just as is, in the condition you see in these pictures. This is a rare piece to find as there is a making on the case that you generally will not find. The U.S. Navy marking is just not seen that often.

This was used during WWII on US Navy ships so they could plot their course by keeping very accurate time. 21 jewels, gimballed, serial no.13272. Housed in a teak wood box. The top lid opens so you can view the clock through clear glass and the second lid opens so you can wind and set the clock. This chronometer is in excellent working condition. Keeps accurate time. The wood case has some wear but there is no serious damage or repairs. The back screws off and the brass has minor oxidation. The box is lined with green felt.
