We call this model the Steelhead in honor of the WWII submarine SS-280. This stand was made and designed for customers asking us for an attractive and safe way to display their vintage diving helmets. Rather than make a rather generic curved piece of wood. We engineered an attractive and secure method of displaying these pieces of nautical history. The Steelhead is somewhat similar to our other model of helmet stand. The Bonefish. The primary difference is the Steelhead does not have a wood base- but a more subtle steel footed base. Under each foot is a rubber pad to prevent damage to the surface the stand is sitting on. Even the same style of helmet can sit on the shoulders differently. That is why we designed this stand to accept a wide range of sizes and styles. First, the upper curve of the steel shoulders is covered by heavy duty memory style foam. The foam also helps prevent the helmet from sliding off the front or back of the display. In addition to the foam we also engineered two"anti-rocking" bolts on the inside of the display. These rubber tipped bolts are easily adjustable once the helmet has been placed on the stand. By securing the rubber ends into the inside of the front and back of the breast plate. On the evening of September 25. 1925 the U.S. Navy submarine S-51 was rammed by the steamship SS City of Rome in open seas off Block Island, Rhode Island, and sank in 132 feet of water, with the loss of 33 lives. This disaster evoked such a storm of popular indignation against the Navy Department that something had to be done. It was felt that at all costs a determined attempt must be made to raise the S-51, if only to restore public confidence. No vessel had ever been raised from such a depth, and to the technical mind the thing was impossible. The brass cylinders both work and do their things but the leather valves are dried out so it doesn't push much air. The check valve is present and from what I know the pump is complete. The gentleman I purchased it from was a long time collector of antique diving collectibles and this was his most cherished piece. All of the parts are original. It had an old restoration almost 50 years ago on the paint and stencil so it looks great and not refinished. The brass has a lovely original soft patina.
