Antique Harpoon Head with Leather Collins & Co #13 Knife Sheath
Antique Harpoon Head of unknown origin comes with the Leather Collins& Co Legitimus#13 Knife. Just as it was found. Guesstimated to be from the early to mid 1900's. Harpoon measures 10 3/4" long. 1 1/2" wide at the barb and about 1/2 diameter at the screw in end. The Collins& Co Knife Sheath measures 13" long including the belt loop. 2 1/2" wide at the knife opening, with a wonderful Art Deco Ivy Leaf design. You are right they do not go together. But them came to me together and are being sold together, What a deal, right! I know nothing more about either piece but those of you looking at this know exactly what they are. Harpoon for Whale Hunting antique 19th century
I attatch 8 pictures. 6 of the gun it's self and 2 of the powder container intact. See the front with a white label and on the back of the canister see original hand written words. One on the gun pictures. Shows the maker's mark. The back part of the gun( the frame with charge holder and the handle where the maker's mark is located) is made of bronze. The front part(from the shield forward is hand wrought iron) is the part that mounted on the swivel, secured to the deck's edge so the harpoonest could use the pistol grip to aim the harpoon. You can see the trigger and the sliding plate that opens by sliding it back to load the charge into after the harpoon was inserted. The sides of the pistol shaped handle is wood as you can see. Antique whaling or shark double toggle Harpoon iron
This is a very old unusual whaling harpoon or possibly a harpoon used for spearing sharks. Blackfish or tuna. It's wrought iron, has a working double toggle barb and a small piece of the original rope marline around the shaft. The hand-forged socket is about 1 3/4" inner diameter and the harpoon is about 18" overall, which leads me to believe it was probably used for harpooning sharks, swordfish or tuna. This is very OLD but in great original shape. As I said, both the pivoting barbs move freely, which is how this iron would stay in the whale or fish flesh. Bronze Harpoon Point 5" long x 1.6" wide 1800s from Halifax NS Canada used
A nice piece of Whaling Memorabilia. This is a Bronze Harpoon Point or Tip that I obtained in Halifax. Nova Scotia, Canada. It is 4 inches long x 1.6 inches wide. There is a 5/16" hole bored from side to side with a 40" piece of old rope inserted. The bore is about 3/8" for insertion of the harpoon throwing shaft and one small hole in the tail which is probably for the retention of the harpoon shaft after use. The ends of the rope are interestingly woven together& have been for a long time. This is one of those items that is rarely encountered these days and a wonderful display item. Charlie Harris

Antique original whaling porpoise HARPOON with toggle head and original line
This auction is for a genuine antique whaling iron or harpoon in the smaller size often used for porpoise. Blackfish or sharks. This iron is about 25" long and has a working toggle head, as you can see in the photos. It also has a remaining section of the woven marline rope that secured the harpoon head to the line feeding off the whaleboard after the porpoise or whale had been struck by the iron. I acquired this iron in southeastern Massachusetts near New Bedford several years ago at an estate sale. So as not to rust. There is a hole in the bottom rear that would be fitted over a shaft for spear throwing, and a hole drilled in the middle bottom that would secure the Harpoon Head to a rope that would be used to reel in the game. I believe these used to hunt large Tuna fish on the Eastern seaboard from the 1920's up to the 1950's. The rope attached is spliced into a loop, that as looped to another longer rope. This tip was then set on the end of a pole and used as a spear head to secure it when it was near the boat; thus, ensuring it wouldn't get away. This has nice patina, and would be great for any Maritime, ... morefishing, nautical collection, or use as a paper weight, desk accessory, or conversation piece. This harpoon is a two-flue type(a classic type used by the whalers before the advent of the toggle irons. This style dates back to the advent of whaling. It is patterned after an iron by Josiah Macy. He was born on Nantucket in 1805. He moved to New Bedford and made harpoons there with his three sons. The MACY harpoon is our most desired type) The iron measures 371/2 inches long from the tip of the head to the end of the split socket. Arctic irons were made longer to penetrate the thick blubber. It is hand formed. And aged thru controlled corrosion to an antique fire black patina. It has a light coat ... moreof oil that you can wipe off. The split socket is served with genuine Stockholm tarred marline( the good stuff and expensive) and secured with a whalers turkshead knot to prevent chafing of the whale line. It is stamped WB( waist boat) to denote the whale boat station. And MACY, as was the custom. The pole is hand hewn. Has old"marine toredo-like" tracks and is preserved with a light hand rubbed coating of boiled linseed oil to preserve it. The whale line is genuine hemp. Not cheap manila. It is stopped to the pole with genuine Stockholm tarred marline. Thus overall the harpoon is 7 foot 6 3/4 inches when mounted. This is a classic harpoon! This whalecraft makes an excellent display of the whaling era. It is suitable for home. Office, museum, and anywhere a nautical theme is desired. Rustic display hangers are included. Rare Greener Double Shank Whale Harpoon
Here is a rare Greener double shank whale harpoon. These were first introduced in the 1850. Here's a description I picked up from the internet: An advertisement for the improved and successful Greener gun first appeared in the Whalemen's Shipping List. And Merchants' Transcript in New Bedford on February 5. 1850: Harpoon Gun. Greene's[sic] celebrated English harpoon gun. Said to be capable of throwing a harpoon forty yards with effect, received for exhibition and sale by Swift& Allen. This simple advertisement did not stir up too much enthusiasm for the Greener gun. However within two years the success of the Greener gun was well known. An article appeared in the same newspaper on April 13, 1852 which said in part: We do not remember that we have particularly mentioned the Whaling Gun invented by Mr. William Greener. The ... moreeminent Gun maker of London. These have been for a long time in use in the British Whaling service, and have been there considered as valuable instruments. We have now the pleasure of adding the testimony of one four own captains in their favor. A letter from Capt. Worth of the Ansel Gibbs of Fairhaven states that he had purchased one of Greener's Whaling Guns out of the British whaler Margaret. Spoken by him in the China Seas, and bound home with a cargo of sperm oil. Capt. Worth had taken one whale with the instrument which he would not otherwise have captured. This whale was struck at a distance of eight fathoms by a harpoon discharged from Greener's Gun. He is strongly of opinion that if he had possessed himself of it earlier he should have been the gainer by two hundred bbls of sperm oil. For the next few years many advertisements and articles of enthusiastic testimony appeared. The greener gun became a success with little competition. Although other swivel guns quickly appeared. Christopher C. Brand and Charles Tracy of Norwich, Connecticut ran an advertisement in the Whalemen's Shipping List. And Merchants' Transcript in New Bedford during most of 1852.

Vintage Antique Carved Seal on Harpoon Tip Perhaps I have absolutely NO idea of what I have here and am hoping someone can tell me. I don't even know if this is the correct category. It comes from an estate sale so I've no idea what its origins are. Nor do I know its age. It is a carved seal sculpture. I do not know what it is carved from but it looks like many I've seen on ebay. The sculpture is mounted on something. The nature of which I can not determine either and am hoping for help. I really do not know. I can only describe what I see. Someone on one of the boards suggested it was a harpoon tip. Maybe? The entire piece is about 5 1/8" long. It is 1 1/2" deep and 1 1/2" tall. It weighs approximately 6 oz. The seal is 2 1/2" long. Early 60s Huge Inuit Art Walrus w/Seal float & Harpoon Enook Manomie Eyes
This is an Old carving. Depicting a Walrus, Harpooned and lying, Dead, on E(as in Enook) Initially I thought it was a scratch, but there's No way. Eonook was Fathered by, Manumie Shaqu, in Cape Dorset. He traveled to Iqaluit, in 1958, at 17 years old(1941-2006) I don't know how long he lived in Iqaluit, but the, lack of a# on the sticker, is indicative, of early creation. When I bought this 8 lb. Walrus, it came w/a stand, w/an E# from Belcher, so soft, you can scrape it w/ your fingernail, no pegs, no Tusks, no Harpoon& the pegs didn't match the holes. I didn't see the hole, in the top, of the Walrus, until I recieved it, Then it, all, made sense. The Harpoon held the seal float, wearing the Walrus out, until he could be captured. Intricate detail has gone into this, entire, piece. I restored the tusk, made the Harpoon(w/close ... moreattention, to harpoons, of the time)I attatched, the hide, found a base& put it together. No restoration was done, to the stone, it's in excellent condition. The bottom is, heavilly worn, as. the Belly, must have sat on the base. I lifted it, slightly, tp prevent, future scratching, of the base. Using chalk& a Jewelers Loupe, I was able to make out, what, clearly is Enooks' E# most of the syllabics. I am confident, this is his work. The eyes are identical, to those in his other works. By no means, unique, however rare& an earmark, of lots of his works. She is in excess, of 10" long, attached to base, w/pegs& weighs 8 lbs, w/out the base& in excess, of 11 lbs, including the base, which is, extremely stable, to hold an 8 lb Warlus. This is a, seriously, old piece, depicting, the Talent& Imagination, of the Artist. I prefer, Old pieces, so I try to find them, when I can.
