Nguzunguzu war canoe prow figurehead SOLOMON ISLANDS SOLOMON ISLAND Canoe Prow Ornament NGUZU NGUZU Undoubtedly the most represented carving of the Solomon Islands violent past is the Nguzu Nguzu. The Nguzu Nguzu was tied to the prow of war canoes when they were coming back from raids to neigbouring islands. It was in the Western Solomon’s Islands that the Nguzu Nguzu was used. The Roviana people made their figure with two hands grasping a frigate bird. The Marovo Lagoon people made theirs grasping skulls. The typed notes that came with this prow are quite interesting and give a general overview of how the prows were used“The custom use of the heads is very similar between the two areas. The war/party/raid would be decided upon and a feast would be held. During the feast the head would be tied to a post in centre position in the village where ... moresacrifices and homages would be made. After the feast when the raid was about to begin the head would be wrapped up in tapa or cloth and carried to the war canoe and placed inside. The warriors would then go to where they are going. But the Nguzu Nguzu would not be displayed on that trip. After their raid against their enemy they would return. If they lost no men dead and took back captives(later feast) the Nguzu Nguzu would be tied on the prow. Their home village could discern if the head was displayed. If it were they would prepare for the returning warriors and the feast they would give. If the raid was not a success(men dead or captured) the Nguzu would not be displayed and thus the home villages would be forewarned of the disaster. In victory or defeat a great feast would be held, just the theme would differ. Victory had the warriors telling and re-enacting the battle. Defeat had the warriors sacrificing to their devil gods to correct whatever violation of taboo had caused their shame. The sacrificing usually included a few people of the village who were deemed as having broken custom thus caused defeat. This example was collected by the original owner in the late 5

Outstanding Large Sculpted Wood Figurehead Corbels
These are a phenomenal pair of figural corbels. I almost called them Green Men but they have a more feminine look. They show indications of being joined to a larger piece(see the joinery notch on the last photo) There are a few nicks and scrapes but overall they are in good condition. Each piece is a large 21" x 11" x 7" Many items I am selling came from a furniture and designcompany that went out of business in 1997. Some pieces were removed fromfurniture that was in disrepair other pieces were left over stock fromarchitectural design projects. A beautiful French Mantle Clock. Strike and chime. Mark's the hour and chimes once on the half hour. Four full brass column's, I don't believe solid. Twin Dragon's on the dial face, along with some excellent brass scroll work, all in very good condition. The mystery figurehead is a cross between female lion and a Gargoyle( pic# 2) You decide. The rear door is brass also and the material inside read door is in good condition. You can see the movement in pic# 8& 10. On the opposite end of the hammer rod, what you can see is glue. At one point the rod must have moved in an unwanted way, so it was glued and now it work's normal. Everything on this clock is in godd to very good condition, it run's very well and strike's and chime as well. The finish is in very good condition as you can see in Pic# 2, 4 and 5 through ... morethe reflection on the clock's surface. When I first came across this piece. It had recently been painted by an amateur who should have left it alone. It was obviously carved wood, so I had it stripped, which is how you see it now. There is still a piece of the boat attached to the bottom, although it is a bit wobbly. It measures 32" from top to bottom, 9" across from shoulder to shoulder, and projects 9" from the wall. I attached a metal hook to the back so that it can be hung on the wall. A very beautiful and unique piece of both African/American and nautical history. The shipping cost is high due to its size and weight. If outside the lower 48, shipping cost will have to be figured.

Up for bid is an antique Crest Craft ring. I received this ring in 1969 and was told. At that time, that it had belonged to the givers grandfather-I cannot verify that. I can verify that I've had it for 44 years. I've never known the ring size. The face measures about 5/8" tall and 1/2" wide; the overall finger area 3/4" across. Crest Craft" is stamped on the inside of the band but I cannot see any information on what karat gold it is. It features a Roman/Centurian figurehead mounted on what looks like black onyx on the face and has an eagle with open wings on both sides. This is an old piece and does have some wear. 18th C American Liberty Carving Folk Art Bust Antique Figurehead att Skillin
Exceptional late 18th century American carving of Lady Liberty wearing a cross and having an exposed breast. The work is carved from mahogany and retains the original rich dark patina. The work is very reminiscent of the Skillin family carvings. The hair and fabric are handled with sensitivity and appear quite fluid. I believe it is rather rare to find Liberty wearing a cross. Visually it works well against the star broach on her shoulder. I do not know the exact use for this piece but it could have been used as part of a stern or archboard decoration. She has a couple of side cracks, the tip of her little pinkie finger is worn off, some light surface scratches or marks, and at the bottom, she has some cracks and missing foam. From the Phillip Schwartz Collection(Ex Vice President of Colt Firearms Mfg. Constructed of five seperate pieces of wood. Measuring just under 28" tall, she was most likely much taller at one point. As evidenced by the signs of fire charring around the back of the base, it is likely that the piece was cut off a salvaged or wrecked vessel. A ship's figurehead was looked upon as being one of the most important parts of a ship, and certainly would have been saved if it was possible. Excellent patina overall, with a few age cracks. Some original hand forged bronze nails can be seen(see photos) while a few later nails were added to assist in holding her chest ... morein place. A truly stunning piece of nautical history. Antique Spanish Ship Model 32" needs repair, figurehead
An antique 30 gun three masted wooden man of war ship model. It is 32" long and 25" high with cloth sails. The brass plate reads"War Frigate Anno 1780" It needs extensive cleaning and string work but I believe all the sails are there. It has a lady figurehead. A stern light and side plates on each side near the stern, all are metal(lead? The stern side plates seem to show angels and symbols(religious? Again, this is a refurbishment challenge. Vintage Ship Nautical Figurehead Faux Wood Woman Figure head shipshead 41" w tag
Nice reproduction ships figurehead of a woman done by Arabesque. A division of the Burwood Products, Co. Traverse City, MI. Most likely from the 70's. This is a large piece and still has its original manufacturer's tag attached and was found in a basement at an estate sale. She is in wonderful condition, with only a few light scuffs and scratches. Cast from a mold, the figurehead has ridges and swirls just like real wood. Nicely painted in subtle colors, not overly bright. She has a shawl around her and is holding a flower in one hand. Size: 41.75" long. 13" across at widest point, and about 7" deep. Be Sure to check out all 12 pictures.

Vintage ALFCO NY Amanda Fenwick Ship's Figurehead (read details)
I know they still reproduce these new but this is an older reproduction. She is fiberglass filled with foam. I have tried to show in the pics that she has some dings and some cracks. I really don't know how old this particular one is. Look carefully at the pics because what you see is what you get. She is 32 inches tall and comes out about 22 inches from the wall when hung.
