CONDITION: Very good. Complete but likely repaired(professionally, probably by a conservator) Fairly uncommon style. Minor scratches and scuffs consistent with use and then burial in soil. Heavy layer of iridescence and soil deposits caused by prolonged burial in soil) DETAIL: This is a very handsome first century A.D. Roman blown glass vial of reasonably nice dimensions. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1 ½ and 3 inches in size. This specimen is over 3 inches tall! It possesses a heavy(albeit patchy) iridescent burial patina which is silver in color with plays of green. Blue, pink and purple. Though you can see some of the original green-colored glass peeking out, the silver iridescent covering is quite striking, very beautiful, and relatively uncommon. These small jars, pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more commonly produced in glass. However the larger pieces of glass are rarely found intact. The Romans for instance produced fluted. Engraved, multi-tiered, and cut glass bowls of fantastic quality and design– and only a few intact specimens have ever been recovered intact. In fact even the medium-sized pieces such as this, and even smaller sized pieces are rarely recovered intact except

CONDITION: Very good though bears evidence of a very neat. Professional repair. Minor scratches and scuffs consistent with use and then burial in soil. DETAIL: This is a very handsome. Complete second century A.D. Roman glass perfume bottle(or“unguentarium” which possesses a light iridescent burial patina with purple, pink, blue and green highlights. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1½ and 3 inches in size– this one obviously exceeds the high end of this scale. However though complete, in a sense it is not intact. The glass perfume bottle was broken, whether in ancient times or perhaps when it was excavated, as there is a fairly clean break toward the bottom. The repair however seems to have been made with bitumen(tar) which would indicate that the repair was ancient. Some of the bitumen has been lost, so there is a small hole in the side of the bottle. But it appears to have been repaired and reused in ancient Rome– a rather uncommon find. Small jars. Sound is produced by striking the membrane with the hands or sticks. There are many variables that determine the sound of the drum including size and shape of the shell, what the shell and membrane are made of and the tension on the membrane. Tension on the membrane in modern drums is governed by adjustment of tension rods spaced around the rim holding the membrane over the shell. Before tension rods came into use, ropes, zigzagging around the circumference, were used to tension the membrane. As the distillation of alcohol was not known until the fourth century BC the scents were extracted by steeping plants. ANTIQUE PERFUME BOTTLE TRIO GERMAN w/ GILTED METAL CADDY HOLDER FRENCH? 1900's
What a wonderful Christmas present this would make for that special person in your life! This is an antique trio of perfume bottles. Each with a faceted perfume dauber, tightly encased in a one of a kind gilted metallic caddy holder. The footed holder is 3 1/4" tall at top of the tallest flower and is nearly 4 1/2" across. The flowers are very ornate and everything is in perfect condition. The patina shows some age. there are no makers marks on the holder, that I can see. The bottles are 4 1/2" tall, each one has a faceted glass top with a glass dauber extending down into the bottle. The glass daubers each have a little soft roughness in the glass near the ends to ensure that a small amount of perfume clings to the glass when being removed to be used. On the bottom of each bottle, in a very light, fine white lined circle are ... morethe words"BOTTLE MADE IN GERMANY" in extremely tiny letters. Nearly faded out on one of the bottles but still legible on all three. NO cracks, chips, repairs, other than the tiny nick on a corner of one of the facets of one crystal stopper as noted in the above description. The only way to find it is to feel for the tiny nick. I am not sure if the footed holder is what is called brass ormolu. If anyone knows for sure, would appreciate an email! Please feel free to email me with any questions or comments.
