ANTIQUE WILLOW WICKER WRAPPED WINE BOTTLE DEMIJOHN FIASCO. Up for auction is this antique"fiasco" I believe it is wrapped in willow with minor wear. It stands 14.5" tall and 6" in diameter at the base. It will hold 128 liquid ounces(or 2 gallons) What has come to be a decorative item. The technique of wrapping the wine bottles in wicker actually came from necessity because early versions of wine bottles produced in Italy were quite fragile and thus wrapped in straw, wicker or leather baskets to protect them during shipping. The word fiasco in Italian means flask or bottle, but it morphed into failure when cheap glass was used, resulting in breakage. Truly, a real fiasco. The bottle is a great greenish color and of typical squat form. The bottle is in perfect condition. With no chips or breakage, and only very light surface scratching. The glass has lots of small and large bubble and some sand inclusions typical of glass of the period, with a deep punt and a clear pontil mark on the underside. This bottle was apparently found in a dig. The bottle measures about 5 3/4 inches in diameter at the widest part of the body and stands 7 inches high. This bottle is beautiful. It has not been cleaned. Just rinsed with water. There is something on the inside glass towards the top(see pic) but it will come off with long brush. The center of the base has a sand pontil mark that is typical of the era. Click shoulder. Neck& finish to view a close-up of those portions of this bottle. Like its English counterparts. This bottle was made in a three-piece mold though very similar types were also free-blown(usually earlier) and produced in dip molds. This wide squatty style was common in different variations from the late 18th century into the middle of the 19th century. This listing is for an antique European Glass large wine bottle/carboy/demi john. This bottle is double dipped with two distinct layers. Neck is applied and has 4 rings but is definitely not for a screw on cap. The neck is slim and body bulbous with a push up base that rises 1 1/2” The bottle is two mold. The top and bottom are both ground and polished. This bottle is very thick about 3/8” thick at the top. The glass of the bottle is clear with a very very light lavender tint. The glass is wavy to the touch. There is an applied Opaque Satin glass(lalique-type) cameo seal on the front of the body of the bottle. The satin glass is iridescent in light. It depicts a profile of a woman with a scarf around her hair and tied at the nap of her neck. She has on a peasant blouse. There is an additional circle that starts at the base of her neck and ... moregoes over her head. Refer to photos. The seal is raised about ¼” The bottle is from Europe but maker is unknown to this seller. Age is unknown to this seller. This bottle weighs 6 pounds. These are from my personal collection and are top quality antiques that I personally purchased. This is a demi john with a basket woven around it. The glass is clear and it still has its cork. This was how wine was stored long ago. You would take your own containers to the winery to get refills. This is 15 inches tall and approx 12 inches in diameter. It is in good used condition. The bottle is in need of cleaning inside. It had dried wine still in the bottom when purchased.
