Very Rare Pair of Victorian Amethyst Apothecary Bottles w/Stoppers
Hold up these black apothecary bottles to the light and see a deep-hued amethyst-colored world. The bottles are mid- to late-19th century. Hand-blown with cut pontil marks, and with rolled glass lips. Both stoppers are in tact. The bottles stand 13 inches high, with a circumference of 27 inches, and diameters of 8.6 inches. The bottles are in beautiful condition with absolutely no significant flaws. A similar unmatched pair of different sizes recently sold at Christie’s for about $1000. The fact that these are a matched pair doubles their value at a minimum.

Most people will not notice. In fact I am sure that thye will not even know about it. But some people are fanatics. There is also some discoloration on the inside of the glass because this is old. That discoloration will never clean out. Overall if you look you will find some things that will make this not perfect. But I think it is beautiful and wonderful. This is a vintage reproduction of a Stiegel bottle from the famous Henry Stiegel glass works of the 18th century. It is hand blown amethyst colored glass with a pontil on the bottom. It is marked MMA. Also on the bottom. It was purchased by my Mom from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC some years ago in the late 1960’s. Dark amethyst color. It was made in the 1960s by Pairpoint Glass for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It measures about 8 inches long with a diameter of about 3 1/2 inches at the shoulder. The color grades from a dark eggplant shade at the bottom moving upward to amethyst to a chocolate-purple with lots of bubbles and swirls and uneven shades of color at the upper area. The lip is flared. There may be some old dirt or dust inside and on the surface toward the bottom there's a little sandy pockmark. Overall good condition, no chips or cracks. There is wear on the bottom, as to be expected Measuring about 19" tall x 11.5" in diameter. It is a very dark black amethyst in color. It has bubbles& irregularities, it seems to be irregular in thickness, being thicker towards the bottom. Some of the bubbles& irregularities are shown in the last 5 pics. It also seems to have ripples in the glass, I don't see any mold lines. I don't have a clue as to it's origin. How it was made, or how old it is, but I do know it is old, seems to be hand blown with a blob or applied top. For auction is a lot of 3 antique bottles in very good condition with no chips or cracks. The cobalt blue bottle is embossed BROMO-SELTZER EMERSON DRUG CO BALTIMORE MD and measures 4 1/2" tall. The amber bottle is embossed POISON and is three sided with ribbed edges. It stands 3 3/4" high. The amethyst bottle is unmarked and measures 5" tall. Antique Amethyst Bottle with Scalloped base- marked RECON 5220- Civil War Era
This is a Wonderful little Amethyst Purple Vintage Bottle. I don't know what it was used for. Perhaps an inkwell or condiments like mustard. It was hand blown into a mold and just under the lip there are marks on either side. The second picture was an attempt to show the name RECON. On the other side the number 5220 is printed. This little bottle is in great shape. It looks to be from the 1860s-1870s. There are no chips or cracks. There is a little stain as tends to happen with very old glass but it does not detract from the beauty of this little piece. It stands at 3 1/2 inches tall

We noticed that there was a thread like glass piece inside the bottle and after some research found that this is called a"bird swing" which is a glass thread joining the two walls together. Bottle has some bubbles in the glass. Bottle is in nice condition with no chips or cracks. This is a nice clean lot of early turn of the century medicine bottles. As reference the tallest bottle is 5 3/4 inches tall and the smallest stands 4 1/4 inches tall. They are dug bottles with light ground patina.They are clean and ready for display. The purple bottle has a flee bite on the lip as shown in the last photo. Especially the light green version which is hard to find.clear bottles are the most common Horton Catos.Both bottles show signs of being dug bottles.the green bottle is in great condition with no chips or cracks.the sun purple bottle has a small chip at the very top edge opening of the bottle and otherwise has no other chips or cracks.see photos
