Veneers became popular in the late 17th and early 18th centuries as an economical way to adorn furniture with rare and expensive woods. Thin layers of individual wood patterns are cut and glued to a less expensive core. The first veneers were hand cut and fairly thick. Up to 1/8 inch. Later, skilled woodworkers learned to cut paper-thin veneers in a variety of ways to achieve artistic patterns with which to decorate furniture surfaces. Flame veneers are especially beautiful when the figure is repeated for a rich effect. The glossy finish is in very fine condition with warm patina. There is some crazing and irregularities in the book matched figured grain. As is typical for antique"character" as shown. The top shows a few very small finish blemishes(it is an untouched 200 plus year old finish) that will be covered in as soon as we apply the tinted wax and buff it out. This set includes six mahogany chairs. Two of them are arm chairs. The beautiful china cabinet measures 81" x 48 x 16 deep. The buffet measures 65" x 35 x 21" deep, the server measures 40" x 32 x 19 deep. The table measures 61" x 40" without the leaf. There is one 12" leaf that is self storing under the table. One chair had been repaired before I purchased the set. There is normal wear and dings but overall the wood grain is very beautiful and it is a stunning set. TALL 64" ACANTHUS CARVED MAHOGANY POST W/ FLAME FINIAL
This is a very nice carved solid mahoagny post that was originally part of a hat or coat rack or stick. It has some nice acanthus carvings along with a geat flame carved finial. It measures 64 1/2" high excluding the bolt on the bottom and is 6" in diameter at the very bottom. The round plate at the bottom can be removed. There are some rubs to the finish and holes where the dowels would have been but otherwise is in good condition. The flame Cuban or Honduran mahogany of which this piece is made is just beautiful. This is an old piece. Dating back to the early nineteenth century. The frame was expertly restored and refinished over ten years ago, so the piece is very sturdy and tight, the finish is excellent and has a wonderful patina. The rolled arms feature exuberantly-carved cornucopia. The lifelike hairy paw feet are complemented by carved acanthus leaves and feathers. New springs and reupholstering in very high quality plush wool mohair in a rich forest green provide a soft, lush finish to this beautiful and functional antique piece. This is a stunning example of empire mahogany furniture that dates from the 1840s to‘60s era. This beautiful piece came out of a home in ... morethe Philadelphia area. Where it sat all its life. It has a gorgeous base with three roll-front flame mahogany dovetail drawers with big glass knobs on the top row, and on the bottom are two demi-lune shaped flame mahogany doors, and three flame mahogany hand-cut dovetail curved front drawers. It has empire scroll posts going down into an empire curl foot, and a thick banded top goes up against the molded flame mahogany triple-section four-post backsplash. It does come with a key. The top has been re-sprayed to remove nicks and dings, and the front has been re-sprayed in a satin sheen lacquer to bring out the look of the flame mahogany. Other than a few nicks and dings along the top of the backsplash molding and the edge of the top, it is in unbelievable condition overall for its age. The overall size is 72 inches long, 23 inches deep, 41 inches high to the top of the base, and 51.5 inches to the top of the backsplash. The backsplash even has a plate groove so you can display plates on top. The center curved front drawers are 24 inches wide, and the doors are 15 inches wide. The sideboard stands on six square taper moulded legs, with moulded spade feet, rising over which are four reeded pilasters and to the centre break-front section are two frieze drawers with flame mahogany veneers and boxwood stringing with mahogany cross-banding and original brass handles with original droppers. The handles have pierced back-plates and laurel wreath droppers. The sideboard has a decorative figured mahogany frieze below the two drawers and flanking either side are the bow front cupboard doors with matched ... moreflame mahogany veneers with cross-bandings and inlays with matched handles. The sideboard is surmounted by a figured mahogany top cross-banded in mahogany and boxwood strung. Behind the left hand door there is a single half-depth shelf, which is removable. The sideboard bears a number on the back edge of the cabinet of"9710" possibly retailed by"Brights of Nettlebed.
