Billings M.D. expert speical agent. washington D.C. printing office 1893. 242 pages, this is from the Library of the University of New Hampshire and it has a few stamps and a book plate, but this was not a circulating book so there is and was no card thing. back cover is a bit loose. tons of info, but my favorite part is the 6 maps each from the two places. each with 5 colors and black. showing relative death rates for 1. total population, 2. White population, 3. Colored(their term) population, 4. under 5 deaths for Whites, 5. under 5 deaths for Colored. they are all shaded by districts. beautiful maps even thought the subject is morbid. THERE ARE CREASES ON THE first couple pages, and there is one piece on the spine that says Washington and Baltimore, it is an attached piece of book cover, there used to be a few more on the spine with more information, but they have fallen off. A beautifully engraved and very detailed map of this region. With a profusion of details not often seen. In Good+ to near VG or better condition. Some light surface soiling or dusting, edge toning as typical, short split at bottom centerfold mended with archival tape[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually pleasing, a nice impression of an interesting map. Early Johnson descriptions bank on the Colton reputation listing Johnson's firm as the“Successors to J. H. Allowing his firm to produce more maps with a larger profit. In 1861. Please be aware that these National Geographic Maps are anywhere from 30 to 80 years old. They are printed on paper that is not acid free and in most cases have not been stored in the best way. So the maps you are buying will be in a condition that reflects both of these facts. The map you get may be worn or lightly torn along the fold lines due to the acidity of the paper and being folded for years. They may also be discolored or mottling spots again due to the acidity of the paper. The borders of the maps may also have small tears. On occasion maps may smell musty from the way they have been stored in the past. When the map is kept in an open area the musty smell will fade away ... morein time. Recently picked this piece up at an auction. Great colors used and a bird's eye view of Washington. District of Columbia, the USA capital. The original was a hand painted watercolor. The map was originally designed and drawn by Oliver Whitwell Wilson. Then Henrietta Linter hand colored the piece this print would have been based upon. This appears to be a print of that watercolor(can see those dots with my loupe) Certainly not a new print though. So probably put out in 1950 with the year noted in roman numerals next to Daniel Burnham's name at the bottom of the print. He is the gentleman whom provided the sayings that are around the border of ... morethe map. I found online that one of these maps is maintained in the State of Maryland Archives. The frame has seen better days. Probably put down on a damp floor that caused the frame finish damage you can see. Probably also was the cause of the watermarking to the map. There are watermarks thru the legend on the right side into the right border of the map and another watermark in the upper left hand corner. The frame is 38.5" across. By 26" tall, by 1" wide.
