Each sheet has existed for a very long time and has probably been handled repeatedly in the course of it's existence. It has a history unique to it as an object. Most of the time any edge splits are short. Minor, insignificant and have been closed- either long ago or more recently with small pieces of archival tape. Most often these splits are trivial and easy to overlook visually. Basically, they would not significantly affect the piece adversely. The item is offered as seen. Please look carefully and make your decision knowing this antique image is nice. But it is not in perfect"like new" condition. However, with whatever flaws it possesses, it remains entirely worthy of ownership and inclusion in any related collection. We feel it will prove very pleasing to its new owner. Two additional insets on the right hand side of the map show Aspinwall City and the City of Panama. This map was an area of considerable public interest through the 1850s. Before the construction ... moreof the Panama Canal the most practical route from the Caribbean to the Pacific was through Nicaragua. Known as the Nicaragua Route, this passage was controlled by the Accessory Transit Company, a property of the American tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt. This vital trade artery was disrupted in 1854, as this map was being prepared, by the outbreak Civil War in Nicaragua. In an attempt to keep the route open, the Liberal Party of Nicaragua, under Francisco Castellón, enlisted the aid of the American adventurer William Walker. Walker invaded Nicaragua with some sixty armed'colonists' and managed to have himself fraudulently elected President, after which is began an Americanization program that included reintroducing slavery into the region. Eventually Walker's small private army was defeated by the Central American Collation and Walkher himself was repatriated to New York, where he faced charges for illegally waging war. Loathe to let go of his imperial ambitions, Walker again returned to the region, this time to British Honduras(Belize) where he was captured and executed by the British governors who saw him as a threat to their own economic ambitions in the constru

1856 Colton Map of Kentucky and Tennessee WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Kentucky And Tennessee. Description: An excellent 1855 first edition example of Colton's map of Kentucky and Tennessee. Like most of Colton's state maps. This map was derived from an earlier wall map of North America produced by Colton and D. Griffing Johnson. Covers the both Kentucky and Tennessee in full as well as parts of the adjacent states. This map was issued at the height of the American westward expansion. Six years before this map was drawn the California gold discovery of 1849 enticed thousands to embark upon the rigorous transcontinental emigration. Meanwhile, with the rise in territorial population to the west of the Mississippi, the eastern states were becoming increasingly divided over the issues of slavery and state ... morevs. federal sovereignty. Within five years these disputes would lead to the American Civil War. Although many major Civil War battles were fought in Tennessee, Kentucky officially remained'neutral' throughout the war. This map also identifies various forts, rivers, mountain passes, fords, and an assortment of additional topographical details. Map is hand colored in pink, green, yellow and blue pastels to define state and territorial boundaries. Surrounded by Colton's typical spiral motif border. Dated and copyrighted to J. H. 1856 Colton Map of Australia
1856 Colton Map of Australia WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Australia. Description: A beautiful 1855 first edition example of Colton's map of Australia. Like most of Colton's Australia maps. This map is derived from an earlier wall map of the world produced by Colton and D. Griffing Johnson. Colton's map covers the entire continent including Tasmania or Van Diemen's Land. Colton's mappings of Australia, updated annually through the 1860s, offer a comprehensive overview of the exploration of the continent's interior. This example depicts the continent with good detail along the coast and a largely unexplored interior. Colton notes Stuart's Farthest Point, Torrens Basin, the Stony Desert, Traveler's Valley, a few rivers, and little else in the vast and desolate continental interior. ... moreTables in the corners show references to various counties in each province. A smaller table in the lower left provides a time line for the exploration of the continent, noting the dates associated with important navigators including Tasman, Arnhem, Hartog, Edel, Flinders, and others. Where known, the map also identifies various cities, towns, rivers, mountains, and an assortment of additional topographical details. Map is hand colored in pink, green, yellow and blue pastels to define the provincial divisions of North Australia, West Australia, South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Van Diemen Land. Surrounded by Colton's typical spiral motif border. Dated and copyrighted to J. H. Colton, 1855. Published from Colton's 172 William Street Office in New York City. 1868 Colton's Pennsylvania Map Singerly & Myers Hand Colored
Great old hand colored map. Colton's Pennsylvania, Printed by Singerly and Myers, State Printers, Harrisburg PA 1868. Shows railroads, common roads, canals, cities, towns, etc. Along the bottom it says it was enterd according to act of Congress in 1855, and interestingly it still lists Virginia as the border state at the lower left(NOT West Virginia) This is in really nice shape- there are very small holes where the folds intersect, and there is a 2" tear at the fold at the upper right(and some creasing) There is another 1" tear at the fold at the lower right. There is NO paper loss at these tears- in the pics here it looks like there is because of the paper being folded under a little bit. Always happy to combine shipping.
