Nebraska, Kansas and Arkansas compiled and published by the brilliant Belgian geographer Philippe Vandermaelen(1795-1869) from his monumental Atlas Universel de Geographie Physique. Politique, Statistique et Mineralogique. A work eventually consisting of six volumes with a total of 378 map sheets drawn as globe gores on the so-called Flamsteed or modified conical projection at a unprecedented 1:1,641,836 scale- the whole of which assembles to form a globe of 7.775 meters in diameter. Originally published in installments, the completed atlas offered no less than the largest picture ... moreof the earth's surface that had ever been recorded. Despite a sale price of 600 gold francs(~ $4000 in 2009 USD) the atlas was a commercial success, selling hundreds of copies to subscribers ranging from the crowned heads of Europe to Alexander von Humboldt to the Pope. The income from the atlas as well as a significant inheritance enabled Vandermaelen to found the Brussels Geographic Institute along the Chaussée de Gand and Charleroi Canal(along with two adjacent and rather opulent homes for Vandermaelen and his brother) the library of which housed the only example of the giant globe ever constructed from the plates of the atlas. Employing a team of draughtsmen, lithographers and geographers Vandermaelen's Institute continued producing maps of all types throughout his life- nearly 5000 published maps in all. The centerfold has a major split of about 11 inches or about 3/4 across the map, but it is a clean split and very reparable for framing. Otherwise, it if fairly clean with some light damp staining along the bottom margin and a couple of minor smudges around the margin. On quality paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. The map has been extensively overprinted to show the many railroad lines then in use. These line correspond to the explanation box which gives the name of the local companies. In near VG or better condition. Some very gentle toning to edges which is hardly offensive[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually pleasing. The atlas is considered the first to compile and show in detail the various counties, cities and towns of Nebraska. The maps show many details including towns, townships, sections, quarter sections, schools, railroads, some houses, owners and other details. ... moreOn some maps there are signatures and handwritten script that were printed in the plate, many of these maps were originally procured from the Nebraska Survey offices and reproduced for the atlas. The maps were first printed by lithographic process and then the color washes were hand applied, often with stencil for the large fields of color over which the outlining was done by freehand, with an occasional hint of a brushstroke. The result is a very beautiful rare early map of the counties and towns of Nebraska. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed being sold as a single sheet as seen in the pics, photographed against a dark background. It is a strong double sided sheet with maps or town plans on each side as shown in the pics, so you would have to choose a side if framing. Overall, a very nice rare example in Excellent Condition. Size: The entire page measures 14 1/2 by 17 1/2 inch with the map image area slightly smaller as shown in the pic with a margin all around.
