Includes all of the San Francisco Bay with river systems documented as far north as Napa and Petaluma. This is one of the rarest and most desirable charts issued by the U.S. Coast Survey as it is the first chart to depict the continental shelf break for a significant portion of the west coast. It also provides a stunning overview of this region shortly following the California Gold Rush. Includes the cities of San Francisco. Oakland, Napa, Petaluma, Brooklyn, Union City, Vallejo, Redwood City, Alviso, Monterrey, Santa Cruz, and others. Identifies Mt. Bache, Black Mountain, Montana Mountain, Mount Diablo, and Table Mountain. While this map offers only minimal inland detail, the maritime detail is extraordinary. Offers thousands of depth sounding throughout and identifies various important bays, sounds, islands, shoals other undersea dangers, lighthouses, beacons, rivers, etc. Notes on lighthouses, tides, soundings, and magnetic variation appear in the upper right quadrant. This chart was published three years after Stansbury's death, so we can assume that it must have been one of his final projects for the Army Corps of Engineers. Vintage Antique 1853 U.S. Coast Survey Map City of San Francisco& Vicinity. Measures 27 1/2" x 20" We have been told this is a reprint of original. There are no markings that we see that indicate its a reprint. When magnified the paper has a rough texture not smooth. The ink is solid not dotted. There is some staining and or discoloration along the center fold towards the middle upper center. In the same area there is also a spot that appears to have been wet it is about an inch wide.

The bottom left corner has a crease and there are two vertical creases near the right edge. There are two pinholes in the center where the foldss intersect.
