Brookfield Massachusetts Map, 1890, Historic original
This is an original map from the Historic Preliminary Edition of the Massachusetts Topographical Atlas. This offering is for the Brookfield Mass area The title page is shown for provenance and is not included. Massachusetts was the first state to work with the Federal Government regarding a National Geological map. This map was published in 1890 based on surveys done between 1884 and 1888. The map size is about 15 1/2 x 20 1/2 inch. The scale is 1/62.500. There is some ageing to the paper, and minor soiling, both to be somewhat expected. The paper the map is printed on is still strong. The map will be rolled and shipped in a tube, maintaining the situation that the map has never been folded. The title of this listing is the same that the mapmakers gave to the particular map itself. They were following a system of geographic divisions of the ... morestate that do not always show the entire town or city limits on to one map. Please view the map to see exactly how they did on this particular map. J. Wesley Powell. The second director of the United States Geological Survey had pushed Congress to approve a national geological map(1882) Powell then established a program to create a national topographical survey to provide the basis for that map. Constitutional constraints required that this survey was implemented through cooperative agreements with each state. The first state to work with the Federal government in this regard was Massachusetts. A special commission was established to organize the state’s side of the work. Which entailed a certain amount of detailed surveying. The survey itself ran from 1884 to 1888 and this“preliminary edition” of the topographical atlas was published in 1890. The 1864 issue of the Family Atlas is the first true Johnson and Ward atlas. Johnson maps from the Family Atlas are notable for their unique borders. This is a 1924 printing of George W. Eldridge's Chart"D" of Massachusetts Bay and Cape Cod. With a detail inset of Marblehead, Salem, Gloucester, and Rockport. This chart measures 31" by 61" and is in excellent condition: it has never been sold or used, and has been in storage since its 1924 printing. This is a paper chart(not canvas or linen-backed) And there is one small tear on the edge below the chart's title, which can be seen in the detail photo. But when flattened out by paperweights(see next photo) the tear is invisible, so this chart, when framed, will look perfect. Except for the small tear. The chart is in mint condition, free of any marks or signs of age. It was printed by Wilfrid O. White of Boston, son-in-law of Geo. W. with a copyright by Sydna Eldridge, Geo W.s widow. There are very few of these ... morecharts in this condition. Chart should be framed and proudly displayed by anyone who lives on the coast of Massachusetts. Seasonally or year round. Description: This unusual map of Cape Cod was drawn in 1932 by the Cape Cod architect Walter M. Gaffney. This particular map was drawn by Hyannis architect Walter M. Gaffney during the Great Depression. According to his daughter. Gaffney issued this map to make supplemental money while the architecture business suffered a downturn. This is considered a'figurative map' or a'decorative map' and reflects a style that first began to appear around 1910. As a map its intention is not so much to provide direction as to illustrate the character, famous places, and historical appeal of Cape Cod. Cartographically speaking, this map style most likely draws its inspiration from late 19th century'tourist ... moremaps' and'railroad maps' Tourist Maps, common to major cities in Europe(usually Paris or London) included profiles of notable buildings and monuments and were designed to help foreign tourists identify and navigate to the most important sights. Railroad Maps' are a related genre more common to the United States. During the latter part of the 19th century railroad boom, railroad companies began issuing decorative route maps extolling the virtues various regions and their accessibility by rail. Standing somewhere between this two map styles, our map combines the decorative aspects of both while reducing cartographic value. It may be hard to get from A to B using this map, but its attractive design and decorative flourishes, make it an excellent souvenir and memento of a wonderful Cape Cod vacation. This 1825 Geographical map of Massachusetts is a copper plate engraved map with full hand color. Text relevant to the map surrounds it on three sides. Map is 11 x 18 inches with a full size plate of 17 x 23 inches. Source of the map is"Atlas Geographique. Statisque, Historique et Chronologique des Deux Ameriques et des Iles Adjacentes" published in Paris by J. Carez, Rue Haute Feuille, No. 18. In 1822, Henry Charles Carey and Isaac Lea published their American Atlas. This volume is based on Emmanuel Las Cases" Atlas Hisorique" of 1803, with updated maps and text modified by Carey, a political economist. The atlas was republished in Paris in 1825 by J. A. Buchon and is considered by many to be of finer quality both in terms of engraving and paper(certainly true in the latter case here) In Buchon’s edition he notes that ... morethe atlas is translated from an atlas done in America based on Le Sage and that he(Buchon) has made" Nombreuses corrections et aumentations" Having been a state since 1788, the map here does not show lots of" unfinished" areas. There is however a wonderful depiction of the state as it was in 1825 along with detailed historical dates. An extra page, Equisse Historique) is included with the map.
