Description: A fine example of Lahontan's scarce and important 1715 map of the Great Lakes. Canada, and the Upper Mississippi. Lahontan's map covers from the Mississippi River eastward to the mouth of the St. Lawrence and the Atlantic Ocean, and from the Hudson Bay to the conjunction of the Missouri River and the Mississippi. The map includes all five Great Lakes in full as well as the various regional river systems. Of the maps associated with Lahontan's narrative, this is considered to be the most factual and informative- his other important map, showing the course of the Longue River(here appearing at the western extreme of the map) is mostly fictional despite being enormously ... moreinfluential. This map is significant on many levels. Its excellent illustration of the regional river systems inspired Kershaw to comment on is usefulness in understanding the elaborate river networks that enabled the French fur trade. It also illustrates the placement of both American Indian villages and French forts throughout the region. Some even suggest that the curious split spelling of the Wisconsin River, Ouaricon: sint' may have partially inspired the first use of the name'Oregon' This map illustration of the Great Lakes is primitive though surprisingly superior to a number of later maps of the region. Please be aware that these National Geographic Maps are anywhere from 20 to 80 years old. They are printed on paper that is not acid free and in most cases have not been stored in the best way. So the maps you are buying will be in a condition that reflects both of these facts. The map you get may be worn or lightly torn along the fold lines due to the acidity of the paper and being folded for years. They may also be discolored or mottling spots again due to the acidity of the paper. The borders of the maps may also have small tears. Up for auction is a vintage tablecloth for a small table or card table measuring 31 1/2 by 33 inches. This has obviously been washed and is faded but you can still see names of cities and places to visit in the states of Wisconsin. Minnesota, and Michigan along with Lake Michigan, Huron, and Superior. There is a small stain on the white edge and a larger stain in Michigan by the sunbathers near Saginaw Bay. There are pictures of a Pontiac in Pontiac. MI, windmill in what I am guessing is Holland, MI, beer in Milwaukee, WI, canoers in northern Wisconsin, Moose in northern Mn. Vintage 1963 USGS Map - Casino Lakes Idaho V Good Cnd T
1963 USGS Topographic map of Casino Lakes. Idaho, Custer County, N4407.5-W11445/7.5, Made from photographs taken in 1957, field checked in 1963. AMS 3072 III NE-Series V893. 22" x 27" size. I don't see any cities or towns anywhere on the map. It mainly consists of the Challis and Sawtooth National Forests. These are in almost the exact center of Idaho. The lowest altitude is around 6000' and goes up to Chase Lookout Mountain- 9954' but there may be points higher and lower. The map is in very good condition. With good color, no significant tears or rips, no marking or writing. The map has been in a roll since the 1960s with the bottom of the map exposed to the air. This exposed part is slightly darkened and dirty, as visible in the main photo. There are corner holes from pins and there is a fold along the bottom of the ... moretopographic part of the map. The paper is also quite yellowed. I usually ship USPS. But I look at other ways to get the lowest cost. I will combine shipping. Shipping weight 2 pounds in a mailing tube. This chart is on the Polyconic Projection. Published by the US Lake Survey Office. No indication to say who did the survey. Measures approx 30 x 44" Cardstock. Of all the maps/charts I have up for auction at this time, this chart shows the most usage wear. Applying their famous motto of bel et utile to create a distinctive"modern" style of mapmaking. This example of the map(Pedley 459) is the rare second state from 1755 and is representative of the clear and well composed. Orderly style Vaugondy championed. These wholly non-existent islands were the subject of negotiations at the 1783 Treaty of Paris and determined to be U.S. territory but the subsequent dispatch of survey teams of course found nothing but water. Even so the islands continued to appear on maps throughout the 18th century. Description: An interesting and uncommon 1755 French and Indian War Era map of the Great Lakes issued for the London Magazine. Centered on Lake Michigan. This map covers from St. James Bay to Pennsylvania and from the Mississippi River to New York, including all five of the Great Lakes. Numerous rivers are named and topography is rendered both by profile and shading(as in the unusual plateau in central Michigan) Issued at the height of the French and Indian War, this map illustrates one of the most active theaters of war, with numerous fortifications and American Indian nations ... moreidentified. Among the most important of these is for Quesne(For Duquesne) which inches into the border of the map at the Forks of the Ohio River. This fort was perceived as critical to controlling trade on the Ohio and its occupation of by the French significant heightened aggression in the region. Cartographically this map follows many of the conventions, including the four fictional islands in Lake Superior, laid down by Jacques-Nicholas Bellin in his influential 1744 map of the same region. Bellin's apocryphal islands include: Philippeux, Pontchartrain, Maurepas, and St. Anne. These islands were invented three years earlier by the French historian and traveler Charlevoix, then subsequently immortalized by the cartographer Jacques-Nicholas Bellin. The islands were intended to honor Charlevoix' s personal patron, the Count of Maurepas, Jean-Frederic Phelypeaux. The largest of the three islands, Philippeaux, is named directly after the count. The second largest island, Pontchartrain, refers to Phelypeaux's family estate.
