Hundred year old atlas color page map large Washington
1902 Pictorial Atlas of the Greater United States and World Published by George F Cram Book Copyrighted 1902- Large Page Map of Washington + + + Reverse side of page is a map of part of Alaska + + + + The map is too wide to fit on my scanner. Lots of details on these maps. See the closeups for examples. page measures 11" X 14-1/2" + + + There is usual darkening from age around the edges of the pages from this atlas and some smudges from handling. But overall the condition is good considering the paper is just over 110 years old! Also. Edges of some pages my have some minor water staining outside the map area. There are a 1/4" margin tear in left margin. All of my maps are originals. I do not destroy good books. But rescue pages from damaged and ruined atlases. I mail maps rolled up in a tube for protection. Which I have found ... moreit to be the most reliable way for the map to arrive without damage. Scarce transitional map depicting Washington state in a pre-statehood configuration with it's border extending across to the Rocky Mountains. A large portion of eastern Oregon boldly labelled"Unexplored" Emigrants route from the states shown as well as a"Emigrants Waggon Road to California" The first state. Of the first printed appearance, for all the many revised Mitchell issues which will follow. Lovely map from Mitchell's"New General Atlas" Which early in 1860 replaced the"New Universal Atlas" The contents were completely revised for the 1860 atlas, all the maps newly conceived and printed. Engraved. Lithographed, bold and detailed full original hand color. A pleasing ... moreexample of mid-19th century Mitchell cartographic printing. Blending the highest levels of American engraving with large-scale commercial lithography and high volume detailed hand-coloring. The 1860 first edition went through at least 2 variant printings in the first year alone. And the maps were continually revised over the following 33 years, often several times annually. Individual maps from the somewhat rare 1860 first issue are quite a bit scarcer than virtually all other Mitchell atlas maps. These early first issue maps have a striking visual appearance which is noticably different from all which follow. As noted by Rumsey. The maps from this 1860 first issue can be distinguished by the lack of a page number outside the engraved border area. More significantly[and not noted by Rumsey] the decorative borders for this 1860 issue are unique, dark and richly printed, with a three-dimensional, almost mezzotint feel, which disappears on most maps after this first issue.
