With a profusion of details and small towns not often seen. In Fair or better condition. Some moderate scattered foxing as typical, dampstain at top corner, but these do not detract from the interest or appeal of the map[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually pleasing. Overall a nice impression of an interesting map which would warrant close inspection. Sheet measures c. 18 3/8" W x 15 1/8" H. Engraved area measures c. 15 1/2" W x 13" H. 33093] note: All old sheets of printed paper possibly have short edge splits. Each sheet has existed for a very long time and has probably been handled repeatedly in the course of it's existence. It has a history unique to it as an object. Most of the time any edge splits are short. Minor, insignificant and have been closed- either long ago or more recently with small pieces of archival tape. Most often these splits are trivial and easy to overlook visually. Basically, they would not significantly affect the piece adversely. The item is offered as seen. For sale a scarce 1863 hand colored map from a Johnson& Ward atlas depicting the states of Kentucky and Tennessee. Overall condition is good with normal aging as found on a map over 150 years old. Generous margins for matting small split at fold bottom of map small area at bottom is folded back not missing, tear at top as shown. Actual image measures about 23 3/4 x 17 1/4 inches, a nice American map of two southern states, printed during the Civil War.

What makes Johnson's maps so desirable is that although many maps from this time period showed railroad routes. His also show major stagecoach and wagon roads. This map shows hundreds of these roads. There are 3 engraved vignettes that show the STATE HOUSE NASHVILLE. The NAVY YARD AT MEMPHIS, and ENTRANCE TO THE MAMMOTH CAVE at the corners. Among the finest maps produced during the 19th Century. There's a 1 1/2" tear on the margin which has been repaired. This does not affect the map area when properly matted and framed. Comments: A large and highly detailed map that is an excellent candidate for matting and framing. On the reverse side is a list of all the cities. Towns and counties with population when available. Note the size of the map. There is greater detail than what is found on smaller maps. General Information: Seldom available and relatively rare. I am pleased to offer these C. 1890's individual maps salvaged from a Rand McNally& Co.s Atlas(elephant folio) Each map is copyrighted with a year in the 1890's and some a little ... moreearlier. All the maps are printed on heavy paper; they are aquatinted and display much more detail than smaller maps. Any relevant faults such as foxing, tears, holes or stains are disclosed if they affect the map area and are visually detracting. You will note that these maps are very larger and at least double the size of most other maps available. Rand McNally published a number of smaller-sized atlases, some with a similar name and same year, so in comparing, pay particular attention to the map size. The larger maps have more detail and additional description. These maps were tipped into the atlas and therefore contain no staple marks. Most of the maps are double-page and therefore have a crease down the center and the tipping strip on the reverse. The crease may be professionally pressed out. But the crease mark will never completely disappear. It should also be expected that the page edges will show some minor wear but the wear will not be noticeable after being matted and framed. The Union lines are in blue and the Confederate in Red. A very beautiful map that will frame up nicely! Size: The map image measures 16 by 27 inches on a page measuring approximately 18 by 29 inches with plenty of margin all around for framing. It is a full double page sheet as issued. This is an 1871 engraved map of Tennessee. Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas and the northern portion of Florida. It measures 12.5 X 17 inches. Published by T. Edward Zell. Philadelphia. Map was engraved by J. Bartholomew. For history of the famous Bartholomew maps, see last paragraph below. We are unable to find many of these maps in the major dealers sites. I cannot stress enough how beautiful this map is up close compared to the photos that you see. Note that the photos do not do the map justice. This is truly an incredible map to behold! This is your chance to own a map that can be the centerpiece of your collection. Cartographer: Joseph Hutchins Colton(July 5. 1800- July 29, 1893) often publishing as J. H. Colton, was an important American map and atlas publisher active from 1833 to 1893(though the firm continued to published in 1897) Colton's firm arose from humble beginnings when he moved to New York in 1831 and befriended the established engraver Samuel Stiles. Colton recognized an emerging ... moremarket in railroad maps and immigrant guides. Not a cartographer or engraver himself, Colton's initial business practice mostly involved purchasing the copyrights of other cartographers, most notably David H. Burr, and reissuing them with updated engraving and border work. His first maps, produced in 1833, were based on earlier Burr maps and depicted New York State and New York City. Between 1833 and 1855 Colton would proceed to publish a large corpus of guidebooks and railroad maps which proved to be very popular. In the early 1850s Colton brought his two sons, George Woolworth Colton(1827- 1901) and Charles B. Colton(1832- 1916) into the map business. G. W. Colton, trained as a cartographer and engraver, was particularly inspired by the idea of creating a large and detailed world atlas to compete established European firms for the U.S. market. In 1855 G.W. Colton issued volume one the impressive two volume Colton's Atlas of the World. Volume two followed a year later. Possibly because of the expense of purchasing a two volume atlas set, the sales of the Atlas of the World did not meet Colton's expectations and it was thus that, in 1856, they also issued the Atlas as
