Grant landed two divisions just north of Fort Henry on the Tennessee River. Although the name was not yet in use. The troops serving under Grant were the nucleus of the Union's successful Army of the Tennessee. His plan was to advance upon the fort on February 6 while it was being simultaneously attacked by United States Navy gunboats commanded by Flag Officer Andrew Hull Foote. A combination of effective naval gunfire and the poor siting of the fort. Almost completely inundated by rising river waters, caused its commander, Brig. Gen. Lloyd Tilghman. To surrender to Foote before the Army arrived. The surrender of Fort Henry opened the Tennessee River to Union traffic past the Alabama border. Which was demonstrated by a"timberclad" raid of wooden ships from February 6 through February 12. They destroyed Confederate shipping and railroad bridges upriver. Please be aware that many of these National Geographic Maps are anywhere from 20 to 80 years old. They are printed on paper that is not acid free and in most cases have not been stored in the best way. So the maps you are buying will be in a condition that reflects both of these facts. The map you get may be worn or lightly torn along the fold lines due to the acidity of the paper and being folded for years. Original, steel-engraved map of parts of Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, and Illinois, North America X, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps. The material placed around the top may need to be glued again at the seam soon and there is a very tiny bit of glue showing just at the seam. There is a tiny amount of discoloration of the inside lining at the top and one place on the inside lining farther down which could be a glue stain. The fabric around the top was not put in place evenly and shows just a bit of the lining along part of the top. This could probably be fixed by anyone with a little craft know how. The lampshade as a whole appears to be in good condition and is still extremely cute.

Condition: The map is in Very Good to Excellent condition for its age with overall light tonal aging. It has lithograph color. Blank on the reverse and has a centerfold as issued.
