Cartographer: Alvin Jewett Johnson(September 23. 1827- April 22, 1884) was a prolific American map publisher active from 1856 to the mid-1880s. Johnson was born into a poor family in Wallingford, Vermont where he received only a based public education. He is known to have worked as school teacher for several years before moving to Richmond, Virginia. Johnson got his first taste of the map business and a salesman and book canvasser for J. H. Colton and company. The earliest Johnson maps were published with D. Griffing Johnson(no clear relation) and date to the mid-1850s, however it was not until 1860 that the Johnson firm published its first significant work, the Johnson's New Illustrated(Steel Plate) Family Atlas. General Description: 1. Strikingly interesting and highly detailed map. Original hand coloring. The map depicts in great detail all of the geographical information known at the time the map was published. Condition: The map is in Very Good condition with overall light tonal aging. Blank on the reverse, printed on heavy paper with a centerfold as issued. Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol. Connecticut on March 20, 1792. His father emigrated from Scotland in 1773. While little is know about his early schooling, it is know that Mitchell found the quality of early geography text books to be lacking, and determined that he would write and publish better works. This decision led him to relocate to Philadelphia in 1829 or 1830, which was then the center of commercial publishing in America. Mitchells first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finleys New American Atlas in 1831. A work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to Henry Schenk Tanners monumental work of the same title, issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward. While the map content in Mitchells edition of the New American Atlas are same as Finleys edition, each map has been significantly improved and revised, primarily with the addition of new owns and roads. Map page from the 1892 Cram's Unrivaled Atlas of the World- M ap of Kentucky and Tennessee double page measures 21" X 14-1/2" The reverse side of the page is Smaller single page maps of Florida and South Dakota + + + There is some typical darkening from age and handling around the edges of the pages. But overall in good condition for a document that was printed 120 years ago! There are some water stains around the edges of the page(see pictures) There is a 1/4 inch tear in the bottom margin. There are a few spots and light smudges around the margin and a stain on the corner as seen, otherwise the map image is very clean in general with bright color and a nice antique quality that would frame up well. Offered for consideration is this mint condition 1972 Kentucky& Tennessee state map. Printed by the Rand McNally Co. The states of KY& TN on one side. Several area maps on the other. I traveled the county extensively during the early 1970s and picked up maps like this one from the local gas stations. They were free then. Shortly after the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo. These maps started being offered for a charge, usually a dollar or so but, by then the driving public had grown accustomed to getting them free so, their distribution dropped off dramatically. Maps like this one marked the end of a motoring related era. Essentially all of my maps were put away in a box decades ago and remain in nearly new condition-no tears or dog ears or marks…an outstanding find for collectors. Historians, and geographers.
