Antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. 1857 Original 157 year old antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. The scarce advertising atlas with numerous full and half page advertisements in addition to the maps. We purchased the atlas as a partial one with some of the advertisements removed. We've included an image of the title page(not included as part of this auction) below, just for informational purposes. The overall size of the page is an impressive 18.5" x 16" The map was printed and then hand watercolored to show the various counties and other divisions. It provides a fascinating snapshot view of the area's geographical details at the time of publication 157 years ago. Condition is very good. And much nicer than the image would suggest. There is some modest age-darkening around the edges, otherwise the ... moremap is very clean. It's not as dark as the photo would suggest. There are some light shadows of printing from the advertisement that was on its opposite page at one time. Visible in the image above. The reverse side is blank. See the image for condition details. But frankly, the image really doesn't do it any justice. We are/will be offering many of these maps on eBay. As well as some of the better advertisements. Large m ap of North South Carolina or Georgia States are on opposite sides of atlas page. Original page measures 11" X 13-1/2" Most of the maps in this book do not show copyright dates. However, those that do show dates were copyrighted between 1895 and 1899. + + + There is some typical darkening from age and handling around the edges of the pages. This map is very large. Measuring 27" x 17" 68.5cm x 43cm) This particular map is of North& South Carolina. Alvin Johnson began publishing maps in 1860. For the first 2 years he published maps with the attribution to Johnson& Browning. In 1862 he began to publish maps under the name Johnson& Ward. This map was produced in 1862 and is a first edition Johnson& Ward map. You can tell the early edition maps by the different boarder around the edge(which we find is much nicer than later editions) This boarder was only used until 1863. The map is original and has not been restored. The ... morehand coloring is original to 1862. These maps are not uncommon however the earlier editions are much harder to find. We also find the earlier edition maps have a much nicer color. The color of this map is very vibrant(don't let the pictures fool you. They are very difficult to photograph and much nicer in person) There is little to no fox marks on this map. Please take a close look at the pictures to be the final judge of condition. You will get exactly what is shown. This map has not been trimmed. The map is complete. There is nothing on the reverse side. Washington, D.C. by the US Government Printing Office. Printed by Julius Bien& Co. Lithographers, N.Y. Published under the direction of Daniel S. Lamont. Secretary of War. Originally issued in the"Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies" Which was issued in parts to subscribers over a period of years, but is sometimes found bound up later into atlas volumes. This oversize and attractive lithographed 19th century sheet depicts in great detail the specific events and locations of the Civil War battles or regions depicted. Astoundingly detailed. With an emphasis upon precision and accuracy, attempting to capture ... morevisually and cartographically the regions and battles depicted. Unlike topographical maps or state maps of the era issued by most cartographers. The underlying premise of these Civil War maps was to depict the cartography as it specifically related to events of the Civil War. Thus, individual battles, small forts, troop movements, local rail lines, panoramic views, etc. are often rendered and explained with precision in a manner quite unique. Also, the very large format of the sheet allows for a level of detail which makes the map perfect for display or study by a Civil War buff, since the detail it contains is to be found almost no where else on this scale. In Good+ to VG. Mostly clean condition. some light damp staining across the top blank margin which will disappear once matted and some light minor age-wear- typical for maps of this era, and in no way offensive or severe. Overall a pleasing example of this interesting map. Which is well worthy of display. Elephant folio sheet measures c. 29 1/4" W x 18 1/8" H. Printed area measures c. 27" W x 13 3/8" H.
