It is a fairly scarce map in a large elephant folio format that is very detailed for the period rivaling the more common Johnson atlas of the period in terms of detail, size and color. Size: The dimensions of the map area between the neat lines measures 16 by 22 inches(41x56cm) on a page measuring 17 1/2 by 24 1/4" 44x62cm) with a margin all around as seen in the main pic. Condition: The map is in Good condition with overall tonal ageing. Original hand coloring, blank on the reverse, printed on a heavy page. There is some darkening around the edges, one edge tear repaired on reverse, slight half inch split at the top of the fold and a few minor spots as seen in the pics, see the pic for more on condition. Colton, was an important American map and atlas publisher active from 1833 to 1893(though the firm continued to published in 1897) Colton's firm arose from humble beginnings when he moved to New York in 1831 and befriended the established engraver Samuel Stiles. Colton recognized an emerging ... moremarket in railroad maps and immigrant guides. Not a cartographer or engraver himself, Colton's initial business practice mostly involved purchasing the copyrights of other cartographers, most notably David H. Burr, and reissuing them with updated engraving and border work. His first maps, produced in 1833, were based on earlier Burr maps and depicted New York State and New York City. Between 1833 and 1855 Colton would proceed to publish a large corpus of guidebooks and railroad maps which proved to be very popular. In the early 1850s Colton brought his two sons, George Woolworth Colton(1827- 1901) and Charles B. Colton(1832- 1916) into the map business. G. W. Colton, trained as a cartographer and engraver, was particularly inspired by the idea of creating a large and detailed world atlas to compete established European firms for the U.S. market. Colton, was an important American map and atlas ... morepublisher active from 1833 to 1893(though the firm continued to published in 1897) Colton's firm arose from humble beginnings when he moved to New York in 1831 and befriended the established engraver Samuel Stiles. Colton recognized an emerging market in railroad maps and immigrant guides. Not a cartographer or engraver himself, Colton's initial business practice mostly involved purchasing the copyrights of other cartographers, most notably David H. Burr, and reissuing them with updated engraving and border work. His first maps, produced in 1833, were based on earlier Burr maps and depicted New York State and New York City. Between 1833 and 1855 Colton would proceed to publish a large corpus of guidebooks and railroad maps which proved to be very popular. In the early 1850s Colton brought his two sons, George Woolworth Colton(1827- 1901) and Charles B. Colton(1832- 1916) into the map business. G. W. Florida& Western Railway Company(SF&W) While undated. It is most likely from the late 1800s. The SF&W was organized in 1879 when railroad entrepreneur Henry Plant purchased and renamed the Atlantic& Gulf Railroad. Plant then built the Waycross& Florida Railroad to connect with the SF&W in Waycross. Georgia; it ran into Jacksonville, Florida. Other branches of the SF&W reached from Thomasville to Albany, Georgia and from Dupont, Georgia to New Branford, Florida. The SF&W was also extended from Thomasville, Georgia to both Bainbridge, Georgia and Chattahoochee, Georgia. After some prolonged legal disputes, Plant's heirs sold the SF&W ... moreto the Atlantic Coast Line railroad in 1902. This map shows the routes of the SF&W in heavy red and the Florida railroads of Plant in light red; connecting railroads are in black. This map measures appx 7 1/2 x 4 inches folded and opens to appx 16x15 inches; it is printed on a very thin onionskin paper. The map has no writing or markings and no spills or smears. There are two tears along the same fold line, one of which is about 5 inches long and the other about 1 inch long; these tears no not detract from the historical value of this map.
