The map has fantastic coloring to it and is a great period county map. With towns, cities, railroads, roads, etc. of the time. Excellent, detailed and interesting period map of these counties. The map is generally in Very Good condition. There is some wear and browning along the edges. There are some creases and small tears around the edges of the paper. But they do not extend into the map area. There are tears along the left side where it was originally bound. A darker stain is on the right edge and other dings here and there, as well. This map is a great piece of US history! It will look very nice when framed. Please note that while I have included pictures of the front board of the Atlas and the Title Page from the Atlas this map was taken from. MAY 1.1796 FIRST EDITION- MAP OF SPAIN& PORTUGAL BY MATTHEW CAREY, PHILADELPHIA, TOPOGRAPHICAL MAP PRINTED FROM A COPPER PLATE- FRAMED IN FINE OAK FRAME WITH ARCHIVAL GLASS AND READY FOR HANGING“SPAIN AND PORTUGAL FROM THE BEST AUTHORITIES. Copper engraving printed on high linen content paper by Matthew Carey. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, May 1, 1796. This lovely map long ago came from“Matthew Carey's American Edition General Atlas of Guthrie's Geography improved. The map was finely framed under archival glass with a nicely tooled Oak frame and then expertly backed with a fine twisted wire for hanging. We have never removed the map from its original framing. The outside measurements of the frame are 15-1/4” tall x 17-3/4” wide or 38.7, 45cm. The inside measurements of the map as framed are 13-11/16” tall x 16-1/8” wide or 34.9, ... more41cm. The map unframed is approximately 35.6, 42.3cm. The publisher date, title, location are just beneath the inside of the bottom of the top of the frame and not possible to identify. The distances on the map are measured with 2 methods: British Statute Miles” and“Spanish Miles” Degrees West Longitude From London” are given in the lower left corner of the map. The map has a small amount of old moisture stain in the bottom right margin– nothing compromised. The map is immaculate and aged to an ivory color with just the original crease running vertically down the middle of the map. Which was the center fold of the map as it was bound in the book. The crease is now quite flattened. There are some reflections in our photos and so please note that the color of the map is very uniform. This lovely map is tremendously detailed topographical map printed from a copper plate. Titled"Scotland with the Principal Roads from the Best Authorities, it was published by Mathew Carey in Philadelphia in 1795. This copper plate map measures 17 inches by 14 inches overall. Including margins, and there is a clear plate mark around the map area. This was the first map of Scotland published in the United States and it reads at the top"Engraved for M. Carey's American edition of Guthrie's Geography improved. This map is in very nice condition overall. Especially for this type of map, and this 218-year-old map has no significant flaws. There is a barely noticeable centerfold(original) and scattered light browning, but this is ... morevery light and does not significantly detract from the great display potential of this early piece of cartographic history. The map is uncolored. Except for some coloring in the border area with England(see scans) and there is a tiny written notation of"Edinburg" along the bottom border of this map. 1896 Baist Trolley Bicycle Railroad Guide Map Philadelphia Railway(J1) Large Map Up for auction is a Baist's Trolley Line. Driving, Bicycle& Railroad Guide Map to the Suburbs of Philadelphia, prepared in condensed form expressly for pocket use. The map was published by G. Wm. Baist, Surveyor and Map Publisher in Philadelphia. I could not find a date on the map itself, however, based on internet research, I believe this map was published in 1896. The cover to the map is in fair vintage condition with wear to the edges& corners, some rubbing to the spine, a good bit of surface dirt& stains with some curling of the right corner. The map is 22" wide by 28" tall and is made of vellum, but am not sure. It is in fantastic condition with some light wear to the edges and age-toning. The redlines indicate the best streets ... morefor driving and cycling that are also occupied by trolley lines. The gree lines indicate the best streets for driving and cylcing that are not occupied by trolley lines. Note that a previous owner wrote their name in pencil at the top of the cover and also wrote their name in pencil on the reverse side of the map as shown in photos. The area covered is centered on Penn Square from the wharf on the Delaware River west to the Schuylkill River. Please see the picture to see the actual area shown and excellent detail on this map. The condition of the steel plate engraving is as shown in the high resolution scan. There are a couple tears on the top that do not enter the map area and a tiny tear that barely enters the margin on the left side. There is one foxing mark to the far left center and one in the lower right corner. This plate has some age toning as should be expected. The paper is single sided with pressed folds. With many dozens of individual sites identified- these include various civic buildings, churches, banks, libraryies, hotels, customs house, theatres, schools, universities, etc. Paper evenly and moderately toned as typical.
