Published in Chicago by the Rand. McNally Co. 1884, a facsimile copy of the title page is included for authenticity. It is not matted nor framed being sold as a single sheet as shown in the main pic. Overall, a very nice small to medium size map that would frame up well. Size: The dimensions of the map area between the neat lines measures 4 1/2 by 6 inches on a page measuring 7 by 10" with a margin all around as seen in the main pic. Condition: The map is in Very Good to Excellent condition with very light tonal aging. Very clean, printed on a heavy page with bright ceragraphic color. It is basically as seen in the pics with no distracting defects to mention, see the pic for more on condition. The pics are of the actual map. Dated 1860 Sheet measures 12.5" x 15" Samuel Augustus ... moreMitchell(March 20. 1792- December 20, 1868) Senior began his map publishing career in the early 1830s. Having worked as a school teacher, Mitchell was frustrated with the low quality and inaccuracy of school texts of the period. His first maps were an attempt to rectify this problem. In the next 20 years Mitchell would become the most prominent American map publisher of the mid-19th century. Mitchell worked with prominent engravers J. H. Young, H. S. Tanner, and H. N. Burroughs before attaining the full copyright on his maps in 1847. In 1849 Mitchell teamed up with printer Cowperthwait& Company to produce the Mitchell's Universal Atlas and the Mitchell's General Atlas. In the late 1850s most of the Mitchell copyrights were bought by Desilver and Co. who continued to publish his maps, many with modified borders and color schemes, until Mitchell's son, Samuel Augustus Mitchell Junior. Entered the picture. S.A. Mitchell Jr. purchased most of the copyrights back from Desilver and, from 1860 on, published his own New General Atlas. The younger Mitchell became as prominent as his father and published atlases well into the late 1880s. Fine condition on great paper. Housed in mylar. See photo.

This auction features a very nice 1901 double-page. Highly-detailed, multi-color map antique of Philadelphia, plus two maps on the back: a full-page map of Denver and a full-page map of Omaha. The maps were published by George W. Cram, Chicago, Illinois, one of the premier map makers of the era. The Philadelphia map has great features and details. It shows all the roads within the city. Plus many major roads in the suburbs that existed in 1901. Also, railroads are prominently shown, as well as ferry lines, terminals, and points of interest in and around the city. The Denver and Omaha maps also show similar features in great detail. The Philadelphia map has a total page size of 14-1/2" wide x 22-1/2" long. And an image size of 12" wide x 19" long. The Philadelphia Inquirer June 13 1863- Siege of Port Hudson Louisiana w/ Map The Siege of Port Hudson saw the first large scale use of'Colored' units of the Union Army. They took heavy casualties during the fighting which lasted from May 22 to July 9 1963 Wiki The reputation of black soldiers in Union service was enhanced by the siege. The advance of the Louisiana Guard on May 27 had gained much coverage in northern newspapers. The attack was repulsed. Due to its hasty implementation, but was bravely carried out in spite of the hopeless magnitude of opposing conditions. This performance was noted by the army leadership. In a letter home, Captain Robert F. Wilkinson wrote, One thing I am glad to say, that is that the black troops at P. Hudson fought& acted superbly. The theory of negro inefficiency is, I am very thankful at last ... morethoroughly exploded by facts. We shall shortly have a splendid army of thousands of them. General Banks also noted their performance in his official report, stating, The severe test to which they were subjected, and the determined manner in which they encountered the enemy, leaves upon my mind no doubt of their ultimate success. These reports had an impact far from Louisiana, or the Union army. On June 11, 1863, an editorial from the influential and widely read New York Times stated. They were comparatively raw troops, and were yet subjected to the most awful ordeal… The men, white or black, who will not flinch from that, will flinch from nothing. It is no longer possible to doubt the bravery and steadiness of the colored race, when rightly led.
