It is from Everts The Official State Atlas of Kansas(Philadelphia: L.H. Everts& Co. 1887) one of the rarer state atlases. A copy of the title page is included for authenticity. The atlas is the first to compile and show in detail the various counties, cities and towns of Kansas. The maps show much details including towns, townships, sections, quarter sections, schools, some houses and other details. On some maps there are surveryor seals, signatures and script that were printed in the plate, many of these maps were originally procured from the Kansas Survey offices and reproduced for the atlas. The maps were first printed by lithographic process and then the color washes were hand applied, often with stencil for the large fields of color. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed being sold as seen in the pics, photographed against a dark background. There are maps and town plans on both sides as seen, so if framing one would have to choose a side to frame. Overall, a very nice rare example in very good condition for its age. Size: The entire page measures 14 by 17 1/2 inches with the map image area slightly smaller as shown in the pic with a margin all around. Condition: It is in Good condition for its age printed on a light buff page and original handcoloring as issued. It is basically as seen in the pics. There is some darkening and damp staining around the edges. Otherwise it is very clean and would frame up nicely. Pics are of the actual map. During the war, newspaper publishers needed a method where they could get the illustrations produced by newspaper artists in the battlefield to the American public as quickly as possible. To do this. The illustration was divided into sections usually two inches square. Double page prints were divided into as many as 40 sections. The section was traced onto a wood block. Engravers cut into the wood with various tools creating a mirror image of their section of the illustration. The blocks were then screwed together, recreating the original illustration. This would then be inked and stamped onto the newsprint. The lines on the image above are a result of where the blocks of wood were joined together. Will my antique print deteriorate? Before 1870. This is a huge. Incredibly detailed map of Philadelphia, showing all streets and transit lines- including streetcars, trolley coach, el/subway and railroads. My guess is that it is from the early 1940s based on the development of the transit network at the time, but I couldn't find a publication date. The map is in very good condition for its age with a small crease in the upper left corner and a small tear on the left edge.

It was produced using a process called cerography where a wax engraving plate was used to imprint the paper. After which, the map was hand colored. Details include: large and small mountain ranges, mountain peaks, rivers, creeks, lakes, cities, towns and upon close examination what appears to be railroad lines. It was published in an 1875 atlas. There is mild age toning, smudging and minor staining in margins, also it protrudes into the margins. It measures 9.5 x 11 inches and is a very attractive and colorful 19th century map.
