This map is from the New Topographical Atlas Of The State of Pennsylvania With Descriptions Historical. Scientific, and Statistical. By Professor Henry F. Walling and O.W. Gray, Civil& Top'l. Engineer. Published in 1872 by Stedman, Brown& Lyton, Philadelphia. The map has fantastic coloring to it and is a great period county map. With towns, cities, railroads, roads, etc. of the time. Excellent, detailed and interesting period map of these counties. The map is generally in Very Good condition. There is some wear and browning along the edges. Some small chips and tears along the edges. As well, but they do not affect the map. There are holes along the top where it was originally bound. And other dings here and there, as well. This map is a great piece of US history! It will look very nice when framed. Please note that while I have included pictures of the front board of the Atlas and the Title Page from the Atlas this map was taken from. Railroads, etc. The map has one center fold given it came from a large book, with no other creases. The map is in great condition for it's age. Some slight signs of age appear but for over 100 years this is in great framing condition, and has a historic look and feel. See photo. Slight discoloring should not effect overall framed map. This auction is for an 1849 map of Philadelphia by M. H. Traubel. Surveyor/lithographer and published by McElroy, in their 1853 directory. It was lithographed at N. Friend’s and P. S. Duval’s in Philadelphia, both of whom are named at the bottom of the map. It shows built-up areas and named localities, streets, parks, and selected buildings from the Delaware River to the Scyulkill River and from the Richmond and Kensington sections in the North to Kean St in South Philly. In the square at the bottom left hand corner is printed"Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1849 by A. McElroy. In the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the eastern district of Penna. Planning for it began in 1871 when Congress passed an act to create the Centennial Commission. A portion of Fairmount Park in Philadelphia was used as the fairgrounds and Hermann J. Scwarzmann, a German immigrant, was chosen to design the layout of the exhibition. By early 1875, construction was underway on the fair's large buildings and some 250 pavilions and auxiliary structures. The major buildings were Memorial Hall, Machinery Hall, the Main Building, Horticultural Hall, and Agricultural Hall. This Original Pictorial map was published by Vaningen& Snyder in 1876. This hand colored lithographic engraving depicts the city of Philadelphia in superb detail at the street level including references to the individual buildings, trains, canals, and roads. Colored coded with pastels according to city wards, it includes nice details in the Delaware River, noting ferry crossings, sand bars, currents, and steamboat routes. A table to the right of the map proper, in the midst of the Delaware River, assigns Public Buildings, Hotels, Churches, and Banks numerical codes.
