Description: This beautiful map of France was printed ... moreby the important American mapmaker T. G. Bradford in 1835. It depicts the Kingdom of France showing its various departments. And covers from the Nord in the north to eastern Pyrenees in the south and from Finistere in the west to Upper and Lower Rhine in the east. Towns, rivers, mountains and various other important topographical details are noted. Elevation throughout is rendered by hachure and departments are color coded. Until 1790 France was divided into 40 provinces based on local loyalties and feudal histories. On March 4th of 1790 the National Constituent Assembly reorganized the Provinces with what the Assembly deemed a more rational political structure. The new department system was intended to deliberately break up France's historical regions in an attempt to erase cultural differences and build a more homogeneous nation. Initially there were 83 departments but by 1800 that number increased to roughly 130. Many of the departments that were created in 1790 remain administrative districts to this day. This map was issued during the July Monarchy, a liberal constitutional monarchy under King Louis-Philippe instigated by the July Revolution of 1830. The July Monarchy would last until the Revolution of 1848 which saw the establishment of the Second Republic. The map was published in Thomas G. Bradford's 1835 Comprehensive Atlas Geographical, Historical and Commercial. Bradford's atlas, published in 1835 was an important work on many levels. First, it was one of the first American atlases to follow an encyclopedic format, offering readers extensive geographical and statistical tables to supplement the maps themselves. Second, it was published in Boston and influenced the city's rise as a publishing center later in the 19th century(at the time most publishing in the United States was restricted to New York and Philadelphia) Third, this atlas was

PIERRE MARIE FRANÇOIS DE(1748-1793) Pierre Marie François de Pagès, French naval officer, world traveler, and writer, was born of a noble family in Toulouse in 1748. Following the settlement of the Seven Years' War and the relaxed French-Spanish rivalry in North America, Pagès crossed Texas on the first lap of a journey around the world. Leaving his naval vessel at Santo Domingo on June 30, 1767, he sailed to New Orleans, traveled by the Mississippi and Red rivers to Natchitoches, then across Texas and into Mexico by way of the Old San Antonio Road.qv He returned to France by way of the Far East and then wrote an account of his adventure. The English translation of his book, Travels Round the World, in the Years 1767, 1768, 1769, 1770, 1771(1791) is perhaps the oldest description of Texas in an English-language book. Pagès later became a captain in the French navy, received the Croix de St. Louis, and became a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences. He accompanied an expedition toward the South Pole in 1773-74 and one toward the North Pole in 1776. Political boundaries as well as individual regions/counties and shows towns. Roads, railways, rivers, lakes, bays, harbors, islands and other important places are shown. The map is in great condition considering the age of the map. The overall size of the map sheet is large at approximately 11 inches by 9 inches. The map is far more beautiful than my pictures show. Towns, rivers, mountains and various other important topographical details are noted. Elevation throughout is rendered by hachure and political and regional territories are color coded. After the defeat of Napoleon in 1815, the Congress of Vienna created The German Confederation to coordinate the economies of these separate but culturally related German-speaking countries. The Confederation acted as a buffer zone between Austria and Prussia, the two largest and most powerful member states. Nonetheless the rivalry between the two powerful states increased until it finally broke out into the Austro-Prussian War. Prussia won the Austro-Prussian War in 1866 which ultimately led to the collapse of the German Confederation. Following the settlement of the Seven Years' War and the relaxed French-Spanish rivalry in North America, Pagès crossed Texas on the first lap of a journey around the world. Leaving his naval vessel at Santo Domingo on June 30, 1767, he sailed to New Orleans, traveled by the Mississippi and Red rivers to Natchitoches, then across Texas and into Mexico by way of the Old San Antonio Road.qv He returned to France by way of the Far East and then wrote an account of his adventure. The English translation of his book, Travels Round the World, in the Years 1767, 1768, 1769, 1770, 1771(1791) is perhaps the oldest description of Texas in an English-language book. Pagès later became a captain in the French navy, received the Croix de St. Louis, and became a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences. This is a map produced by Cram. The map does not have a copyright date. But I estimate it is probably about 15 to 20 years old(possibly older? This map measures 76 inches high by 68 inches wide. It comes mounted on a spring roller. With a wood dowel at the end. There are three layers to the map. These include a Texas map. A United States map, and a World map. This map shows wear from general classroom use. And it also has some other issues. On the United States map, there is a small rip in the center where the pull string is located. On the Texas map, there is some"wrinkles" but no tears. While these defects are present, they do not affect the use of the map, and the map is priced to match these defects. Featured is a vintage 1963 or 1964 Six Flags Over Texas amusement park map. The park is located in Arlington. Texas, between Dallas and Fort Worth- a vacation destination for so many families that grew up in the South. Looking at this map will bring back so many memories. The difference in the park between now and then is stunning- mainly the lack of roller coasters! I have discovered the only way to truly date these maps is to know the history of the rides. Although the map is undated. It shows LaCucaracha(the first roller coaster at the park) which was only at the park from 1961 until 1964. It also shows the first log ride which did not open until 1963. Therefore, the map could have been used in 1963 or 1964. The map is in fair condition- There is a marker area to the top scroll along with a few crayon marks. There are tack holes throughout ... moreand especially at the corners. There is also a severe blunt tear at the upper right corner and at the top upper edge. There are four(4) small holes noted at folds(may be visible from the back) The folds are delicate. Featured is a vintage 1966 to 1968 Six Flags Over Texas amusement park map. The park is located in Arlington. Indian Territory and New Mexico In 1876 when this superb folio map of Texas was published by the S.A. Mitchell Co. The frontier was still in flux, and the western counties including those on the barren and little known llano estacado had not yet been formed from the early territories. This oversize limited edition reproduction brings out many normally hard to see features. In this transitional period. The railroads had only reached as far west as Fort Worth& San Antonio. Shown are the major Indian war trails, the military roads still connecting all the frontier forts and many now-forgotten place names. This is one of the few major post-Civil War maps that shows the entire ... morestate of Texas without chopping off either the Panhandle or the western sections which adds greatly to the visual appeal. In addition. A very large part of Indian Territory and New Mexico is shown in full color and detail. The map features the trademark grapevine border coupled with effective but subtle hand wash coloring. This is in direct contrast to the crude& garish"checkerboard" look of many of its contemporaries. This may be one of the most beautiful of the many Mitchell maps of Texas. And possibly one of the best looking Texas maps ever published. Historic 1780 Spanish Colonial Map of Texas. New Mexico& Mexico ~ Rigobert Bonne(Reproduction) Sheet Size: 16" x 20" Great Gift! This is a highly decorative reproduction. On a heavy acid free sheet, of the original 1780 map which is in the Electric Books collection. It is several times larger than the original and allows the great detail and notation to be read easily. The overall effect of the map and its color is luminous and it should be framed and viewed under good light. About the original map: In this period some time before the American Revolution and the Louisiana Purchase. Spain ruled all of what is now New Mexico, Texas and Mexico. All of that would change in a few years as Mexico overthrew the Spanish rule, Texas separated from Mexico and eventually Mexico lost the northern part of its empire. This French map of the ... moresouthern part of North America is from the work of Rigobert Bonne. The striking multi-hue outline coloration was done by hand and added later. The map shows as far north as Santa Fe and to just below Guadalajara. Also including the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. The southern coast of the United States in included to western Florida, and the river systems are included inland, especially for Texas. There are two references to Texas. Both the region and a settlement of that name on the Red River, near present-day Austin. Other named places include San Paul, San Saba, Nacogdoches, Fort Adayes, San Antonio Bexar and the town of Paso(El Paso) A printed note mentions the explorations of La Salle, and the map locates New Orleans, Mobile, and Pensacola along the Gulf Coast to the east. The lands of the Apache, Comanche, Caddos, Yumas and other tribes are also noted. Rigobert Bonne was the Royal Hydrographer of France. Whose primary interest was in marine charts. However, with his Royal connections and access to the cartographic documents in Paris, Bonne was able to compile maps containing some of the most up-to-date information of his time. Sr. the boundaries of the state were still unsettled. The"stovepipe" extension reaching to the 42nd parallel is shown and the boundaries around El Paso in far west Texas are still unresolved and will be until 1850. The area west of Dallas and Fort Worth was almost entirely wild and the llano estacado atop the Caprock was largely unknown territory. This early map also shows Indian Territory which had been formed in the 1830's as well as Taos and Santa Fe which had been claimed by the Texas Republic. Sheet size: 16' x 20" Available in several sizes From an original in the Electric Books Collection. This beautiful map was printed in the O.W. Gray National Atlas. It was drawn by Frank A. Gray who did many of the outstanding maps for the Gray Atlases of the period. Accurate to about 1876 in the post Civil War/Reconstruction era as the railroads were beginning to expand again and the great Cattle Trails were still in progress. This fine map is full of detail. The Comanche's and Kiowa's were still a threat. Covers from New Orleans across to modern day California, northward to Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Oklahoma& Colorado. The mountainous regions around New Mexico are taken directly from Alexander Humboldt's important 1811 map" Carte General du Royaume de la Nouvelle Espagne" Which is among the earliest to delineate ... morethe Spanish southwest and Rocky Mountain region with any sense of modern accuracy. Interestingly, this map which is printed just 3 years later adds and amends many topographical details of Humboldts map east of the Rockies, including new mountainous elevations and rivers while also adding new tributaries to the Colorado river, etc. Evidence of Pikes important 1806-07 explorations in what is today Colorado is seen for instance in the unnamed mountain(Pikes Peak in Colorado) Which is here simply labelled"Highest Peak" The Great Salt Lake and the close-by Utah Lake are both mapped with incomplete borders and a fictitious river between them. Large area below these lakes"Unknown Parts" As the area depicted extends east much farther than Humboldts. This hand colored copperplate map shows Mexico when it included most of Texas and the southwestern states. The mythical city of Quivira is shown in the area of present-day Nevada. Mountain ranges and waterways are imaginatively illustrated. Many Indian areas are named. This interesting map is in very good condition with wide margins.
