And many subsequent issues were produced, the main differences being the depictions of the evolving railroad infrastructure. CONDITION: Very Good or better. A few small brown age spots(in the Lake Erie portion and at the right base of the engraving) A few tiny perforations at the interstices of the folds, and a few very small edge splits, but overall this is a very well preserved map without the usual serious issues at the folds. The paper is overall crisp and bright, and the map would display very well. The folder is nicely preserved too, with just a few nicks to the edges, and fraying to the paper endpapers at the fold but the publisher's ad is nicely preserved inside. Please see the photos. Beautiful, steel-engraved Victorian antique map of Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky
This is a lovely Victorian-era map of portions of the American midwest published in London in 1833 by the famous Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) Sheet 8 from an atlas of the time(titled North America Sheet VIII Ohio. With Parts Of Kentucky And Virginia) There is magnificent detail of the villages, courthouses and roads throughout an area that extends east to Pennsylvania and south into Tennessee. The northern part of Indiana is nearly blank and labeled Putawatomies and Miamis. It measures 16 by 13 inches and the borders are hand-colored. There is some minor chipping in the margins. But otherwise the map is in fine shape for its age. The SDUK was founded by Henry Brougham in England in the 1820s with the aim of publishing information for working- and middle-class people who were unable to get formal education or prefered ... morethe idea of self education. The Society began publishing maps in 1829 and over the course of 14 years. It sold some 3 million maps from 209 separate plates. At first, the design and engraving of the maps was under the direct control of the SDUK using the publisher Baldwin and Craddock. Following Baldwin and Craddock's insolvency in 1842. The maps were published by Chapman and Hall for two years and finally by Charles Knight until the completion of the series in 1846. The maps published by the SDUK(especially the city plans) were widely considered to be some of the finest engraved maps of the era, and continued to be published until the end of the 19th century. This is an original. 180-year-old steel engraving. It is not a modern reproduction. It is fully guaranteed and can be returned for a full refund(minus postage) no questions asked. Ohio and Wood and Pleasant counties, West Virginia, printed more than 74 years ago. This map labels the steamboat route on the Muskingum River and locates the Parkersburg Marietta Interurban Railway. One of the interurban electric railroad lines that operated in the early 20th century, until the combined effects of the Great Depression and an increase in automobile travel led to their closing. The map also shows steam railroad lines. Including the Baltimore& Ohio, the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago& St. Louis, and the Northwestern Virginia. It even locates individual houses and farms! Including present-day Parma Heights and the city of Parma, south of Cleveland and Brooklyn, printed more than 110 years ago. The map names property owners. With lot sizes in acres, and locates roads, schools, and churches. It labels the Cleveland, Elyria& Western Railway, an interurban electric railroad which was the first suburban streetcar line running into the city of Cleveland. The map is drawn on a scale of three inches to one mile. And area labeled Parma, astride a tributary of Big Creek, is today's Parma Heights. The township itself is divided into four tracts: Ely, Tukerman, Cheny, and Blake. An inset at the right shows Walter's Partition, Blake's Tract, in more detail. ... moreA second inset is labeled"West Park P.O. and shows Lot 12. Rockport Hamlet, on a scale of 400 feet to one inch. Details include the Buckeye Fish Company, the Lake Shore& Michigan Southern Railroad, and the Cleveland, Elyria& Western electric line along Lorain Avenue. The map and insets are printed on a single sheet which measures 17" x 28" and is copyrighted © 1903 by H.B. Stranahan. The scans below show some of the detail: The area depicted was largely agricultural when this map was printed. In 1912. A portion of the township seceded to form the village of Parma Heights. The balance of the township became a city in 1931. Thirty years later, with its population soaring, it was the fastest growing city in the U.S. Condition: This map is in very good condition. Also know as US Route 20, between Mentor and Painesville Townships in Ohio. These maps were originally produced in 1915. Both maps have 1971 circular date stamps from the Cleveland Planning Department on the verso so it appears these were created in 1971 from the 1915 originals. I am really not sure if these are the 1915 originals or if they are reproductions prodcuced by the Cleveland Planning Department in 1971.
