1855 North Carolina Framed Pre Civil War Map Train Steam Boat Canal Routes EX NR
Here's one of two North Carolina Pre-Civil War maps that have matching frames that we are currently listing. This one was published by JH Colton and Company and was published in 1855. It shows the canal and steamboat routes as well as the railroad and train lines as well as the roads of the time. This was from a period in time when river transport was the best way through the Carolina woodlands. It shows the birth of Cities such as Raleigh and Charlotte while also showing towns and other locations that no longer exist. The map measures 13" by 15-1/2" to the outside of the decorative border. The frame is made of wood and has a bluish green or greenish blue color over gold. It has a slight washed look to make it look antiqued but I Don't know the age of the frame. It could be arts and crafts. These maps were the standard of ... morethe time period before the Civil War when plantations where still thriving and the political atmosphere of the country was changing. The maps. Even for the south and southern states would have been manufactured and printed in the north due to the better technology and industry of the time. These maps would look great in an office for a surveyor, government official, historian, or history professor or teacher for a school or college. Need something authentic for your Civil War Re enactment. Reenactment groups have a chance here to show people on an authentic map how the soldiers found their way at the time. Original, steel-engraved map of North and South Carolina- North America XI) by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps. Finely engraved, and carefully researched, the maps set a standard of excellence for commercial map-makers in England for decades to come. A work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to Henry Schenk Tanners monumental work of the same title, issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward. While the map content in Mitchells edition of the New American Atlas are same as Finleys edition, each map has been significantly improved and revised, primarily with the addition of new owns and roads. This little 99 page volume is a valuable resource for what occurred in preparation for the war and in NC during the war. The author was in the Department of History at VMI. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps. Finely engraved and delicately colored, these maps set a standard of excellence for commercial map-makers in England for decades to come. Offered for consideration is this mint condition 1972 North& South Carolina state map. Printed by the Rand McNally Co. The states of NC& SC on one side. Several area maps on the other. I traveled the county extensively during the early 1970s and picked up maps like this one from the local gas stations. They were free then. Shortly after the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo. These maps started being offered for a charge, usually a dollar or so but, by then the driving public had grown accustomed to getting them free so, their distribution dropped off dramatically. Maps like this one marked the end of a motoring related era.
