Please be aware that many of these National Geographic Maps are anywhere from 20 to 80 years old. They are printed on paper that is not acid free and in most cases have not been stored in the best way. So the maps you are buying will be in a condition that reflects both of these facts. The map you get may be worn or lightly torn along the fold lines due to the acidity of the paper and being folded for years. They may also be discolored or mottling spots again due to the acidity of the paper. The borders of the maps may also have small tears. On occasion maps may smell musty from the way they have been stored in the past. OWhen the map is kept in an open ... morearea the musty smell will fade away in time. Description: A fine example of the U.S. Coast survey map of Oregon Inlet. N. Carolina. The map covers the inlet as well as parts of Bodie Island, Pea Island, and Duck Island. This inlet, located on North Carolina's Outer Banks, provides access to the Pamlico Sound from the Atlantic Ocean. Apparently a hurricane in 1846 separated the islands. A ship name the Oregon rode out the storm on Pamlico Sound and was the first to report the new inlet, thus immortalizing itself in the region's geography. When this map was made, the southern island, today's Pea Island, was as yet unnamed and so both islands are here identified as'Bodie Island' Studying this pass on Google Earth will reveal ... morea remarkable change in the regional topography as over 100 years of storm has moved the inlet southwards over 2 miles since its original formation. Today Oregon Inlet is spanned by the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge and North Carolina Route 12. This map offers numerous depth soundings as well as notes on soundings and tides. The triangulation for this chart was completed by W. M Boyce. The topography is the work of John Mechan. The hydrography was accomplished by Henry Mitchell. Issued under the supervision of A. D. USA came from an 1898 publication of the United States. Rand McNally World Atlas illustrating states and territories in the United States as they appeared at the time. well over 100 years ago. Looking over these maps I am amazed at how many differences there are today. Sellers Inventory no. M1898002294/95) Condition: The map has faint smudges noted and may appear slightly curled in the photo. However it will lay flat. Please use the photos to determine the condition of the map. Of Interest: A list of counties. Creeks, islands, ... morelakes, rivers and towns is provided. A population chart and historical information is included on the back side of the map, as well. This is an amazing detailed map and with some care it can be mounted and framed to enjoy a piece of history. This is the actual original item and not a copy. As it was always in a book the colors have been wonderfully preserved. These will look wonderful framed and hung on your wall and will be sure to give you pleasure for years to come. Detailed and colorful maps that give us a glance into the past, and have been lots of fun pouring over them for hours by myself, and with friends, looking at the huge differences that have occurred in the last four to five generations. Only affected about a quarter of an inch along the edge, which has been restored with paper from the atlas and one repaired nick on the top edge, very minor. It is an awesome color newspaper map of Reidsville. North Carolina published by The Reidsville Review in 1996. Map has been folded for a long time and needs to be flattened or framed. It measues apx. 26 3/4" closer to 27" when flattened) wide x 22 5/8" It is substantial. Other side of map shows a list of the featured businesses on the cartoon map(since"select locations" were represented) and a detailed street map of Reidsville. It shows wear expected of a newspaper insert that is almost 17 years old. There is age discoloration. Yellowing/tanning. Edge wear, a couple of tears, creases, wrinkling, ink rubs and transfers, corner wear, handling wear, dirt and dust, some rubs and fading to areas along the folds. It was found in a sealed container and it has a strong storage smell from the plastic. It is still colorful ... moreand legible and would display well if it is framed and flattened. However. It also gives the location of numerous local Indian tribes which then still inhabited the state around this date(in places even saying how many villages were to be found) Also prominently names and ... morelocates the planned colonial settlement of" Azilia" it is seen in large letters above the word"South" in Carolina) Azilia" was a short-lived visionary plan of Sir Robert Montgomery to create a settlement of early English colonists south of the Savannah River. By walling and militarily planning the defenses. The settlement could thus withstand the assault of the local savages(indians) This plan resulted from the near collapse of South Carolina due to the then recent Yamasee War losses(see wikipedia for an overview of this seminal series of events and their effects) Azilia is identified and located in large letters on the map. This imaginary proposed settlement of Azilia appears on only a handful of printed Carolina maps. All of which are scarce or only found in manuscript form. Furthermore, this never-to-be-realized early American settlement only appears on the earliest states of this Moll map(it is changed to"Georgia" on later states) At bottom right. Co, Philadelphia(NOT New York) Scale is 1-3/8 inches to 10.000 feet. No doubt custom ordered to facilitate the sale of the property. I have found only reference to one other High Shoals map from the period ~ a MUCH SMALLER 1870s map of High Shoals archived among the Duke University documents collection(Charles Wilkes papers) that was originally published as part of a High Shoals report(pamphlet ... moresize) but it is listed as a single pamphlet page at only 5-1/2 x 10-1/2 inches and without color. This 16 x 16 inches map is NOT disbound from(nor was ever included) in a book or volume of printed maps. It was uniquely printed as an individual customer order of a specialized map. CONDITION: Map is in two pieces. Split along right vertical crease(about one-third of the map is detached) With overlap folds at opening. Ready for simple flattening(pressing) and repair(archival tape on back would do it) and framing. Some fraying at top margin(well outside map border) and other outer edge nibbles and small holes. Only slight age spotting. But with pinholes from having been folded and(originally) attached to another document(likely the deed to High Shoals when sold by Admiral Charles Wilkes to William P. Bynum and Thomas Grier) I do not have this deed. But I have a signed legal transfer(mortgage) of the property from Wilkes to Bynum& Grier which I will be listing soon on eBay. Map details, printing, and printed color areas are still quite fresh from having been folded for 140 years or so. Complete with all borders and blank margins outside the map.
