Originally issued in the"Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies" Which was issued in parts to subscribers over a period of years, but is sometimes found bound up later into atlas volumes. This oversize and attractive lithographed 19th century sheet depicts in great detail the specific events and locations of the Civil War battles or regions depicted. Astoundingly detailed. With an emphasis upon precision and accuracy, attempting to capture visually and cartographically ... morethe regions and battles depicted. Unlike topographical maps or state maps of the era issued by most cartographers. The underlying premise of these Civil War maps was to depict the cartography as it specifically related to events of the Civil War. Thus, individual battles, small forts, troop movements, local rail lines, panoramic views, etc. are often rendered and explained with precision in a manner quite unique. Also, the very large format of the sheet allows for a level of detail which makes the map perfect for display or study by a Civil War buff, since the detail it contains is to be found almost no where else on this scale. In Good+ to VG. Mostly clean condition. Map likely displays a few short minor edge-splits in the wide blank margins, all of which will disappear once the map is matted for display, plus a couple short minor splits at centerfold ends which are very easy to overlook or miss visually since they are outside the printed area. Also some light minor age-wear- typical for maps of this era, and in no way offensive or severe. Overall a pleasing example of this interesting map. Which is well worthy of display. This is an 1871 engraved map of Virginia. West Virginia, North& South Carolina, Southern part of Florida, with insets of the environs of Richmond& Charleston. It measures 12.5 X 17 inches. Published by T. Edward Zell. Philadelphia. Map was engraved by J. Bartholomew. For history of the famous Bartholomew maps, see last paragraph below. We are unable to find many of these maps in the major dealers sites. The ones we did find had prices of $200- $500 and up and were not in as good a condition as this map. Be my guest. Go look for yourself. Paper shows minor age spots. Normal on most maps this age due to paper content. We have shown in the scans of the map and close ups to get a great idea of the beauty of the gentle hand coloring and detailed engraving. Length of shoreline is shown in three individual sections. Side by side on one map. Shows details of Norfolk. Offered here is an antique 1862-1863 Johnson's North and South Carolina map by Johnson and Ward. This is an original map taken from a Johnson Family World Atlas. The map measures approximately 26 3/8" x 18 1/8" Some of the edging is torn and discolored. And there are some water stains. Colton, was an important American map and atlas publisher active from 1833 to 1893(though the firm continued to published in 1897) Colton's firm arose from humble beginnings when he moved to New York in 1831 and befriended the established engraver Samuel Stiles. Colton recognized an emerging ... moremarket in railroad maps and immigrant guides. Not a cartographer or engraver himself, Colton's initial business practice mostly involved purchasing the copyrights of other cartographers, most notably David H. Burr, and reissuing them with updated engraving and border work. His first maps, produced in 1833, were based on earlier Burr maps and depicted New York State and New York City. Between 1833 and 1855 Colton would proceed to publish a large corpus of guidebooks and railroad maps which proved to be very popular. In the early 1850s Colton brought his two sons, George Woolworth Colton(1827- 1901) and Charles B. Colton(1832- 1916) into the map business. G. W. Colton, trained as a cartographer and engraver, was particularly inspired by the idea of creating a large and detailed world atlas to compete established European firms for the U.S. market. In 1855 G.W. Colton issued volume one the impressive two volume Colton's Atlas of the World. Volume two followed a year later. 1890 Iliff's Imperial Atlas World Map State Florida North & South Carolina Ohio
This is for the map you see in the pictures. This is a big map at 11 x 14-1/2 inches from edge to edge. The map is in great condition with no rips or marks in the map part and just slight toning to the page. This is a double or triple sided map and will include the states in the title. Some of the map pages are made together as they have a 2 page map on the inside and a single one on the back of each side of that. You will have to look carefully at the pictures as that is the maps you will get. I have a lot of other maps on from this atlas and will combine shipping. This atlas was already divided into the maps before I bought it so this is how you will get the maps. This is a very hard to find book and not a common atlas. Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol. Connecticut on March 20, 1792. His father emigrated from Scotland in 1773. While little is know about his early schooling, it is know that Mitchell found the quality of early geography text books to be lacking, and determined that he would write and publish better works. This decision led him to relocate to Philadelphia in 1829 or 1830, which was then the center of commercial publishing in America. Mitchells first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finleys New American Atlas in 1831. A work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to Henry Schenk Tanners monumental work of the same title, issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward. While the map content in Mitchells edition of the New American Atlas are same as Finleys edition, each map has been significantly improved and revised, primarily with the addition of new owns and roads. With a wood dowel at the end. This map shows a little wear from general classroom use. But overall it is in good condition. This is an older map, so there is some age(a little yellowing, etc. There is a small tear by the dowel rod on the left-hand side that measures about 1.5 inches. Nice. Vintage compact case by the Pilcher Company. Opens to reveal mirror, and another panel then opens to the side to reveal a compartment which could hold powder. Interior is clean. The front cover has a pictorial map of much of North Carolina. I think it dates from the late 1960s or around 1970. When closed. It measures 3 1/2" x 2 3/8" Will be shipped first class. There is some backprinting, general handling with age and some glue residue on the reverse not affecting the map side.
