The American Cartographer, Charles Desilver, bought the copyrights and plates of Mitchell's atlas of the same name and updated the maps and made some minor changes particularly ... morein the title block, added his own border style, choices of color and published the atlas from 1856 to 1859. The run of the Desilver atlas was more limited in number than the previous Cowperthwait publishing, thus the Desilver maps are the rarest of all the Mitchell maps published and difficult to find. A copy of the title page is included. Overall, a nicely preserved map with nice color with a lot of interesting features including maps of the Albany and Rochester areas, Vicinity of New York City, an inset of Nieagara Falls and Goat Island, along with flanking Census information showing populations of towns and counties. Size: The map image measures approximately 16 by 26 inches on a 17 1/2 by 27" page. Condition: The map is in Very Good condition for its age with overall tonal aging and original handcoloring as issued. Blank on the reverse, printed on a strong flexible page, not brittle, basically as seen in the pics. Folded into 8 equal sized panels of 3 7/8" x 9" the typical size brochure. The design of this piece is totally Art Deco. The map of Manhattan is extremely detailed and very attractive- very frame worthy. When folded. The back and front are the same design, showing ... morea futuristic skyline of New York with silver& black skyscrapers that look like something from the 1920's movie"Metropolis" The brochure is printed on glossy paper and the colors are excellent to near mint with no fading. The map-brochure is in overall very good condition. But there are small indentations at the bottom of the piece when folded at the point of the folds. This may have happened when the brochure was in a distribution slot or bound with string along with many other copies of the item( just a guess. But I believe this to be from the late 1950's to early 1960's. The map is identified with permanent marker on the wood end and exterior of the mounting fabric. Wood end dowel is split. Bound set of Eldridge’s popular harbor charts depicting the Atlantic coast from New York City to Boston Harbor in great detail. Rarely seen together in the atlas, the charts were also sold separately, and a price of either 30 cents or 40 cents appears in the top left of each chart. Vintage Map Lower Manhattan New York City NYC
One vintage map of lower Manhattan with many structures shown that no longer exist(ex: elevated subway lines and the waterfront docks. Etc) It measures 12" x 20" and has some damage on several edges as shown in photos. One side is a bit soiled. The other much cleaner. The year 1916 is written in pencil at the bottom of one side. Rare Hand-colored 1867 Antique Map of city of Poughkeepsie, New York
On offer is a charming bit of Hudson Valley history. A steel-engraved map of the city of Poughkeepsie in New York’s Dutchess County. The plate measures 18 in by 15 in and is hand-colored. It was published in 1867, just after the Civil War, in the first edition of Frederick Beers’ very scarce Atlas of New York and Vicinity. It provides an array of information about the town and region, including businesses in operation at the time and the names of individual homeowners and farmers along with the location of their properties. The paper is fairly brittle(as is to expected for a 150-year-old document) and there is some slight water staining in the margins. But otherwise it’s in fine shape. It’s a truly remarkable document of Hudson River Valley history and would be of particular interest to anyone who can trace their ancestry back to that era, ... moreas their property is surely labeled by name. Beers was a prominent atlas and map publisher from a large family of cartographers. The plate was engraved and published in collaboration with A.D. Ellis and G.G. Soule. The book in which was printed was essentially a county atlas of Westchester. Dutchess and Putnam counties in New York, and included 62 plans of various towns and villages in existence at the time. The Beers family specialized in producing property atlases. Sometimes along with local histories, and they are considered among the most accurate of the era. This is an original engraving. It is not a copy or modern reproduction. It can be returned(at buyer’s expense) for any reason whatsover for a full refund. No questions asked. NEW YORK(United States) Printed New York: c. 1854; by Phelps. Quaint. Almost folk-art original antique wax-engraved(cerographic) map. With lovely hand color which greatly enhances the visual appearance. A scarce and very interesting American map from the mid-19th century. Printed by a then revolutionary method of reproducing maps. This particular type of mechanical engraving upon waxed plate printing process is now essentially extinct as method of reproducing popular maps. Rendering this printed leaf an interesting original artifact from a past era. Printed on period paper which may show typical gentle signs of age. Perhaps some minor light spotting or foxing, but retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. In near Very Good or better antiquarian condition. Mostly very clean overall, small minor age dustiness or surface wear/ ... morespotting- please inspect enlargable scan closely, any noteworthy flaws to the printed surface area should be noticable within picture provided.
