This is a 1892 Walker's Railroad map of New Orleans. It is genuine. Not a copy or reprint. Long considered the most beautiful of all 19th Century Railroad maps; this is the best of the best. You are looking at a map from Walker’s International Atlas. The maps themselves were the product of George Cram. A well know map publisher at the turn of the century. Worldcat.org does not list any 1892 editions. Each map measures 17 1/2 X 12 1/2 inches. The maps in this listing are in good overall condition. With minor showing of handling. Description: An exceptionally scarce 1863 Charles Magnus Civil War era broadside map of the Mississippi River valley from St. Louis to the Delta of the Mississippi. This map. Or as it is called'panorama' is presented in strip format divided into four distinct sections. each section is decorated with an engraved vignette view of the region's most prominent Mississippi port, from left these include New Orleans, Vicksburg, Memphis, and St. Louis. Though published at the height of the American Civil War the detail present throughout this map could only have been achieved through a personal reconnaissance of the river. Not only does the ... moreunknown author identify important cities and towns, which would have been common knowledge, but also lesser known country markets, trading posts, farms, saw mills and plantations. Moreover, many of the minor place names were doubtless derived from interviews with local authorities, some of these include'Poverty Landing' Hard Times Landing, Dead Man’s Bay, and'Devil's Tea Table. Such a reconnaissance would have been impossible, or at least highly unlikely, during the years of the Civil War, so most probably the research behind this map took place in years just prior, 1859 or 1860. The choice of Charles Magnus, a New York based map and print publisher well connected with the United States military, further suggests that the cartographer was mostly likely a Union Man. Magnus is also probably behind the map's title, which includes'And its Fortificaions' in bold print, wording clearly intended to appeal to those interested in the Mississippi theater of war. Description: The extremely scarce first edition first state of Bellin's important 1744 map of the Gulf Coast from New Orleans past Mobile Bay. As far east as Apalachicola Bay and the St. Marks River. Though still quite speculative, Bellin's rendition of this little known coastline was, at the time, among the best available. The cartographer charts the course of the Mississippi River with some care nothing both the'Detour des Piaquemines' and the English Turn or'Detour a L'Anglois' Most of the delta ... moreis represented a ffertile grassland, but some forested regions suitable for European settlement are noted near the Abandoned French Fort de la Boulaye. Following the map eastward along the coastline Bellin offers details as they were available. The site of various battles and massacres are identified as are American Indian villages, mission stations, fortifications, and European entrapots such as Biloxi, Mobile, St. Marc, and indeed New Orleans itself. A Spanish settlement is noted near the Apalachicola River and St. Joseph Bay(Baye St. Joseph) a clear reminder that much of this territory, though claimed by various European powers and American Indian nations, remained very much up for grabs. Mobile Bay, situated near the center of the map, is vaguely formed with Bon Secour Bay being vastly under represented. In the far northwest corner of the map the Natchez Trace or Natchez Road. This network of linked gamed trails is one of the world's oldest roadways, well used centuries before the arrival of Europeans. Would look fantastic framed under glass. Shadows seen are my scanner. Not the map. According to worldcat.org. There are only two editions of this atlas in the major reference collections, making the maps from this atlas quite dear, fantastic to behold, and a smart investment. Since it was obtained during the same years of the 100 or so other maps I'm currently offering, I believe it to be about the same date as the rest.1969-1971) This map may be particularly useful for a historian since it shows the Big Easy before Katrina.
