No. 59" and was from surveys done by the Engineering Dept. before 1866 and is extremely accurate in all details. Some of the nautical charts in this booklet show depth soundings; beacon lights. MS) south to Mobile Bay. The map illustrates the six and fifteen mile limits of the railroad grant, as well as private land grants and townships. Approximately 800 x 330 mm(31 1/2 x 13 inches) from edge to edge. Description: A scarce 1837 map of the Mississippi River's Des Moines Rapids in the vicinity of Fort Des Moines(Montrose. Iowa) by Robert E. Lee. Centered on the Mississippi River and oriented to the west, this map covers from Fort Des Moines south along the river for about 10 miles. It covers parts of modern day Illinois and Iowa, but when this map was issued, the western shores of the Mississippi were part of Wisconsin Territory. The detail through is stupendous with individual buildings, farms, and stores alongside the river being noted- often with family names. This map was intended to illustrate the Des Moines Rapids, one of two major rapids on ... morethe Mississippi River. These, along with the Rock Islands Rapids further north, became increasingly problematic in the early 19th century as steamboats dramatically increased travel and commerce along the Mississippi. The Army Corps of Engineers assigned 30 year old Robert E. Lee, then but a First Lieutenant, the task of mapping and blasting a channel through the rapids. This map is the result of those efforts. Lee's channel, little more than a widening of already existing passages, is clearly visible winding its way through the generally rocky riverbed. The survey work behind this map was completed by a party under the command of Robert E. Lee. It was drafted by M. C. Meigs, and Henry Kayser. The engraving and printing was accomplished by W. J. Stone of Washington, D.C. It was published a Senate report for the 25th Congress, 2nd Secession, 1837. Size: Printed area measures 21.5 inches high by 50 inches wide. Condition: Very good. Some creasing. Backed with archival tissue. Some wear and toning on original fold lines. Description: An uncommon map of often neglected and misunderstood significance. This is Nicolas de Fer's 1705 map of the Gulf Coast, Florida, and Texas. This is one of the earliest published maps to show any significant detail of the lower Mississippi Valley. De Fer's map covers the North American coastline from, roughly, Tampico, Mexico eastward along the Gulf of Mexico to include all of Florida and the eastern seaboard as far north as Cape Roman(vicinity of Charleston, SC) It also includes the Bahamas, parts of Cuba, and some of the inland waterways connected to the lower extensions of the Mississippi River. De Fer is illustrating an ephemeral ... moreperiod in the colonization and mapping of North America between the 1688 destruction of La Salle's colony of Fort St. Louis(modern day Inez, Texas) and the consolidation of French power in the region through Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne Sieur de Bienville's 1717 founding of New Orleans. De Fer began drafting this map around 1699 during a period of great political sensitivity. Without a clearly declared heir, the death of Spain monarch, Carlos II, left a power vacuum in both Europe and the New World- one on which the French crown was strategically positioned to capitalize in both arenas. Rene Robert Cavalier, Sieur de La Salle, a French nobleman, explored the lower reaches of the Mississippi from the north, reaching the delta in 1682(not, as the map's dedication here suggests, 1683) Recognizing the enormous profit potential in controlling the Mississippi River, thus linking French colonies in Canada with the Gulf of Mexico, La Salle returned to Europe to petition the King to build a settlement at the mouth of the river. Emory, a topographical engineer, who ... morehad previously done surveying in the southwest with Kearny in 1846-47, was appointed by President Polk to the Boundary Commission in 1848; Emory was to prove the heart of this commission throughout its life, acting variously as Commissioner, Surveyor and Chief Astronomer. Though not called for by his commission. W. H. Emory prepared this map on a large scale to go along with his report. It showed the information of his survey of the border as well as information to the north based on the information from the Pacific Railroad Surveys. It is, in effect, the summary map showing the Federal government's knowledge of the lands west of the Mississippi just before the Civil War. This great map has many large sections remaining unexplored. The territory of Oregon, New Mexico, the huge Nebraska Territory, Kansas and Texas. Important, and dramatic map of the Mississippi River Valley from the Gulf of Mexico to Fort Chartres(Illinois) Set on the meridian of New Orleans, this map covers the Mississippi Valley from the Delta of the Mississippi where it joins the Gulf of Mexico to Fort Chartres, located in present day Illinois just south of St. Louis, Missouri. The map also includes suburb detail of the lands to the immediate east of the Mississippi including numerous tributary rivers: the Pearl River, the Yasous River(Yazoo River) the Chickasaw River, ... moreand the Ohio River, among others. Also noted are various American Indian villages, old and abandoned fortifications, trading posts, mineral deposits, and other resources. Topography is rendered in profile. Compiled by Lieut. John Ross of the 34th Foot Regiment, this map was commissioned immediately following the British acquisition of this territory at the end of the French and Indian War. Ross, who was trained as a field surveyor, was commanded to ascend the Mississippi from the Gulf of Mexico to Fort Chartres, the last French holdout in North America, where he was to accept the surrender of Commandant Louis Groston de Saint-Ange et de Bellerive. Along the way he made detailed notations and surveys which were later used by Sayer to update and revise the established French cartography as laid down by Jean Baptiste D'Anville. Sayer published this work in his American Atlas, considered the most authoritative and comprehensive mappings of North America to date. Description: An exceptionally scarce 1863 Charles Magnus Civil War era broadside map of the Mississippi River valley from St. Louis to the Delta of the Mississippi. This map. Or as it is called'panorama' is presented in strip format divided into four distinct sections. each section is decorated with an engraved vignette view of the region's most prominent Mississippi port, from left these include New Orleans, Vicksburg, Memphis, and St. Louis. Though published at the height of the American Civil War the detail present throughout this map could only have been achieved through a personal reconnaissance of the river. Not only ... moredoes the unknown author identify important cities and towns, which would have been common knowledge, but also lesser known country markets, trading posts, farms, saw mills and plantations. Moreover, many of the minor place names were doubtless derived from interviews with local authorities, some of these include'Poverty Landing' Hard Times Landing, Dead Man’s Bay, and'Devil's Tea Table. Such a reconnaissance would have been impossible, or at least highly unlikely, during the years of the Civil War, so most probably the research behind this map took place in years just prior, 1859 or 1860. The choice of Charles Magnus, a New York based map and print publisher well connected with the United States military, further suggests that the cartographer was mostly likely a Union Man. Magnus is also probably behind the map's title, which includes'And its Fortificaions' in bold print, wording clearly intended to appeal to those interested in the Mississippi theater of war. During the war, newspaper publishers needed a method where they could get the illustrations produced by newspaper artists in the battlefield to the American public as quickly as possible. To do this. The illustration was divided into sections usually two inches square. Double page prints were divided into as many as 40 sections. The section was traced onto a wood block. Engravers cut into the wood with various tools creating a mirror image of their section of the illustration. The blocks were then screwed together, recreating the original illustration. This would then be inked and stamped onto the newsprint. The lines on the image above are a result of where the blocks of wood were joined together. Will my antique print deteriorate? Before 1870. Newspapers were not made from wood pulp as they are today. Instead, they were printed on a sturdy paper made by pulping linen rags. These rags came from clothing and ship sails. Because this kind of paper contains very little acid, your antique print could easily retain its appearance for many years into the future, if handled properly.
