This is an original map from the Historic Preliminary Edition of the Massachusetts Topographical Atlas. This offering is for the Barre Mass area The title page is shown for provenance and is not included. Massachusetts was the first state to work with the Federal Government regarding a National Geological map. This map was published in 1890 based on surveys done between 1884 and 1888. The map size is about 15 1/2 x 20 1/2 inch. The scale is 1/62.500. There is some ageing to the paper, and minor soiling, both to be somewhat expected. The paper the map is printed on is still strong. The map will be rolled and shipped in a tube, maintaining the situation that the map has never been folded. The title of this listing is the same that the mapmakers gave to the particular map itself. They were following a system of geographic divisions of the state ... morethat do not always show the entire town or city limits on to one map. The second director of the United States Geological Survey had pushed Congress to approve a national geological map(1882) Powell then established a program to create a national topographical survey to provide the basis for that map. It is from an 1879 edition of Black's Gerneral Atlas of the World(Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black. 1879) a copy of the title page is included for authenticity. The publisher is stated in the bottom center margin. It has original handcoloring as issued, although the red areas and outlining are printed. It is not matted nor framed being sold as a single sheet as shown in the main pic, blank on the reverse. Overall, a very nice map that would frame up nicely. Size: The dimensions of the map area between the neat lines measures ... more16 by 21 inches(41x55cm) on a page measuring 17 1/2 by 23 1/4" 45x59cm) with a margin all around as seen in the main pic. Condition: The map is in Good to Very Good condition with overall light tonal ageing and some darkening around the edges of the margin. There is a four inch tear that slight half inch tear through the title block area. Repaired on the reverse and a slight half inch separation at the bottom of the fold, otherwise it is very clean with strong color on a heavy page, blank on the reverse.
