This great Index Map of Massachusetts was prepared by the Army Map Service Corps of Engineers; Department of the Army. October 1948. The map is in great shape and has one fold down the middle and binder holes on the left hand side. This map would look great framed on your wall. The red is still really bright and there is no water damage, rips or tears in this map. Map also has parts of New York, Connecticut, Vermont, NH and Maine. This is an original map from the Historic Preliminary Edition of the Massachusetts Topographical Atlas. This offering is for the Webster Mass area The title page is shown for provenance and is not included. Massachusetts was the first state to work with the Federal Government regarding a National Geological map. This map was published in 1890 based on surveys done between 1884 and 1888. The map size is about 15 1/2 x 20 1/2 inch. The scale is 1/62.500. There is some ageing to the paper, and minor soiling, both to be somewhat expected. The paper the map is printed on is still strong. The map will be rolled and shipped in a tube, maintaining the situation that the map has never been folded. The title of this listing is the same that the mapmakers gave to the particular map itself. The second director of the United States Geological Survey had pushed Congress to approve a national geological map(1882) Powell then established a program to create a national topographical survey to provide the basis for that map. Constitutional constraints required that this survey was implemented through cooperative agreements with each state. The first state to work with the Federal government in this regard was Massachusetts. A special commission was established to organize the state’s side of the work. Which entailed a certain amount of detailed surveying. The survey itself ran from 1884 to 1888 and this“preliminary edition” of the topographical atlas was published in 1890.
