Walker started his life as a dry goods merchant but developed an active interest in publishing during the early 1870s. Walker began publishing in 1878 when he partnered with an unknown New York Firm. Two years later, Walker brought the operation in house by partnering with his brother, Oscar W. Walker, in the opening of a lithography studio at 81 Milk Street, Boston. Shortly thereafter the firm expanded to new offices at 160 Tremont Street, Boston. The Walker brothers produced a large corpus of works, most of which focused on travel and tourism in New England. Walker also established the Walker-Gordon Milk Laboratory. This interesting investment was based on the premise that infant deaths could be avoided by providing higher quality milk. The company eventually became a great success, producing a high quality cow milk that closely resembled human breast milk. In the process the Walker-Gordon laboratory developed many of the dairy health standards that are still with us today.

This profile is a cross section of Hoosac Mountain(also called Hoosic) part of the Berkshires Mountains of Massachusetts. It illustrates the Hoosac Tunnel, constructed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Troy and Greenfield Railroad between 1848 and 1876. The construction of the Hoosac Tunnel, then referred to as'The Great Bore, was a major undertaking and heavily criticized in its day. The map is accompanied by a booklet entitled The Hoosac, illustrating miners descending the shaft on its cover. It includes a 16 page'History of the Hoosac Tunnel' a poem by E. A. This map opens to a very generous 45" x 33" and is drawn on a scale of three miles to one inch. Which provides excellent detail. It shows electric railways and automobile roads, with arrows indicating gradual or steep declines, an important concern of early motorists. It also shows steam railroads. Churches, schools, cemeteries, railroad stations, lighthouses, and town boundaries. The coverage area extends from the New York border to Winchendon and New London.
