Beautiful HTF vintage 1947 World Book Encyclopedia map Maryland & Delaware LOOK!
This is a map of Maryland and Delaware from the limited printing of the 1947 post-war edition of the World Book Encyclopedia. It Is really a pretty map; the colors are bright. The printing is crisp, and it is in great condition. This map is a 2-page spread disbound from the encyclopedia. It was tipped in using a separate little tongue of paper, so the map itself was not cut as it was removed. There is a crease down the center where it was folded in the book. The map was a little too big to fit on my scanner, so not all of it is shown in the scan. It has a white border all the way around it. The map is 9 1/2 inches by 13 1/2 inches. The altitude is color-coded, from green for the lowest altitude through yellow and orange to red for the highest altitude. I don't know much about maps, so I don't know how this one was made. It has an ... moreold-fashioned lithographed look to it, but I think I can see dots when I look at it through a magnifying glass. On the back of the map Maryland and Delaware towns are listed with their location and population(circa 1947) This is such a nice-looking map! It would look great framed. However, there is an earlier copyright date of 1860 along the bottom margin in small print that states"Entered according to an Act of Congress in the year 1860 by Augustus Mitchell in the Office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington. A copy of the title page is also included for authenticity. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed being sold as a single ... moresheet as seen in the first pic. Size: The map image measures approximately 11 by 13 inches on a 12 1/4 by 15 1/4" page(31x39cm) with a margin all around as seen in the pic. Condition: It is in Good condition for its age. Printed on heavy paper, blank on the reverse with original handcolor as issued. It is basically as seen in the pics, with overall tonal aging and slight darkening around the edges. There are a few minor smudges and spots around the margin, slight edgewear, otherwise the map image is very clean in general with bright color on strong flexible paper with a nice antique quality that is rare to fine in this condition. The pics are of the actual map and very accurate of condition and color in general, however the actual map looks much better. Please note that the map includes what is today the State of West Virginia. West Virginia became a State on June 20, 1863. The map has great details and is, I believe, hand colored. There are 3 engravings: The University of Virginia, Richmond and Fortress Monroe, Va. The latter also has a notation Copied by consent from Magnus Picture.
