Iersey in America Description: This is an extremely rare whimsical 1731 map focusing on the remnants of the ephemeral colony of New Sweden by Jonas Silferling and Tobias Biorck. New Sweden. Which by 1731 had been assimilated into British New York, occupied parts of Delaware, New Jersey and Maryland between the Chesapeake Bay and New York. The present map centers on the Delaware River and Philadelphia, but extends northward as far as Albany and sough as far as Virginia, taking in portions of eastern Pennsylvania and Southern New York. As intended, it illustrates numerous early Swedish settlements, including Fort Christina(Wilmington, Delaware) on both sides ... moreof the Delaware River as well as various American Indian settlements and the english colonial cities of Philadelphia, Burlington, New York, and Albany. Curiously, much of the map is in english rather than Swedish, an indication of British social and political dominance in the region and a suggestion that Tobias Biorck, though a first generation son of Swedish immigrants, thought and lived primarily in english. The cartouche, which is surmounted by the British royal armorial crest, is also suggestive of the 1655 assimilation of New Sweden into British America. Other decorative elements include beautifully engraved sailing ships, a sea monster, stylized American Indians, and various flora and fauna(most Turkeys) indigenous to the region. The map’s is also particular charming because of some of its cruder features which include rough engraving, the idiosyncratic lettering, florid calligraphy, and the proliferation of mis-spellings such as'Buks' County, Baltemore' and'Khesapeak Bay' It is noteworthy that the present example is exceptional and superior in condition to most other known examples held in institutional collections. The Maryland Historical Society shows that the map was exacted by A. Hoen& Co. in 1906. Many street names are still the same; some have changed. There are folds on the map and some discoloration and creases though the map. Which is framed, is in generally good condition. The frame measures 24” by 30” and the actual map measures 19 ½” by 22 ½” It appears that no others of this map have been sold for many years and that the Maryland Historical Society and the Library of Congress are the only owners of this map I can find. Established as a colony for free blacks and ex-slaves from the United States, printed more than 160 years ago. The map was drawn under the direction of Commander William Francis Lynch. United States Navy and published in"Message from the President of the United States to the Two Houses of Congress at the Commencement of the First Session of the Thirty-Third Congress, 1853. The image area measures 38.7 x 64.1 cm[15-1/4" x 25-1/4" And the map is titled Maryland in Liberia. Details includes the dates various tracts were purchased by the Maryland State Colonization Society. Along with district boundaries, villages, settlements, shoreline features, ... morerivers, and mountains. Relief is shown by hachures. And depths are shown by soundings. There is an inset of the Cape Palmas area, locating Fort Hall, Missionary's House, and Russworm Island, named for the colony's first black governor, John Brown Russwurm. Other named places and features include Bushmans Town. Harper, Garraway, Seabo Country, Grand Taboo, Bassa Grove, Half Bereby, Kadahboo Bluff, Villages of Tahou, Barbo Country, and the road from Cape Palmas to Barakah and Dehneh. Typical of government publications of the time, and is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. The area depicted is in the southeastern portion of present-day Liberia and was a colony of the Maryland State Colonization Society when this map was printed. The atlas was published in a very limited context to be distributed to government officials in the three houses of government as a reference for assessing the Civil War. This is from the original first publishing, that lasted from 1891-5. Size: The map image measures 16 by 27 inches on a page measuring approximately 18 by 29 inches with plenty of margin all around for framing. It is a full double page sheet with a centerfold as issued. Condition: The map is in Very Good condition with overall tonal ageing. Blank on the reverse, printed on a heavy pliable page. These county. State, city& country maps are some of the most ornate and beautifully coloured maps published in the US in the 19th century. For over 50 years, Mitchell his son's and their successors were the most prominent cartographical publishers ... moreof maps and atlases in the United States. Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol. Connecticut on March 20, 1792. His father emigrated from Scotland in 1773. While little is know about his early schooling, it is know that Mitchell found the quality of early geography text books to be lacking, and determined that he would write and publish better works. This decision led him to relocate to Philadelphia in 1829 or 1830, which was then the center of commercial publishing in America. Mitchells first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finleys New American Atlas in 1831. A work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to Henry Schenk Tanners monumental work of the same title, issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward. While the map content in Mitchells edition of the New American Atlas are same as Finleys edition, each map has been significantly improved and revised, primarily with the addition of new owns and roads. This is especially true in the South and West. Finley had originally collaborated with D.H. Vance and J.H. Young in the preparation of the maps. Vances name is removed from the Mitchell edition.
