Oriented to the west, Lamb's map covers from Albemarle Sound to the Susquehanna River and from the Appellation Mountains to the Delaware Bay and New Jersey, inclusive of all of modern day Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, the Chesapeake Bay, and the Delaware Bay. The map notably includes the Chesapeake Bay's western watershed, luring potential colonists with the promise of large navigable rivers and rich fertile lands. This map is fairly large. Measuring 18" x 14" 46cm x 35.5cm) This particular map is of Delaware& Maryland. Alvin Johnson began publishing maps in 1860. For the first 2 years he published maps with the attribution to Johnson& Browning. In 1862 he began to publish maps under the name Johnson& Ward. This map was produced in 1862 and is a first edition Johnson& Ward map. You can tell the early edition maps by the different boarder around the edge(which we find is much nicer than later editions) This boarder was only used until 1863. The map is original and has not been restored. The hand ... morecoloring is original to 1862. These maps are not uncommon however the earlier editions are much harder to find. We also find the earlier edition maps have a much nicer color. The color of this map is very vibrant(don't let the pictures fool you. They are very difficult to photograph and much nicer in person) Attention to detail was also better. All of the coloring is within the proper lines with no spill over. There is little to no fox marks on this map. Please take a close look at the pictures to be the final judge of condition. You will get exactly what is shown. This map has not been trimmed. There is also a section that lists points of historical interest with a key map. It measures 19” x 25” Condition is overall good. There is creases from handling. Some edge wear, age related discoloring and several small stain spots, small holes in two folded intersections, one very small split at the bottom of one of the folds, and the travel agent’s name is stamped on the back and a hand written inventory number is written in the front left corner.

Station stamp is acceptable, as are small wrinkles introduced in printing. Age toning acceptable only if even. MINT As above. But minor edge wear seen. Light pencil marking okay. Age toning may be uneven. NEAR MINT As above. Professional routing marks or a minor annotation okay. Creases show usage. But map has not been misfolded. EXCELLENT As above. But wear is evident. This oversize and attractive lithographed 19th century sheet depicts in great detail the specific events and locations of the Civil War battles or regions depicted. Astoundingly detailed. With an emphasis upon precision and accuracy, attempting to capture visually and cartographically the regions and battles depicted. Unlike topographical maps or ... morestate maps of the era issued by most cartographers. The underlying premise of these Civil War maps was to depict the cartography as it specifically related to events of the Civil War. Thus, individual battles, small forts, troop movements, local rail lines, panoramic views, etc. are often rendered and explained with precision in a manner quite unique. Also, the very large format of the sheet allows for a level of detail which makes the map perfect for display or study by a Civil War buff, since the detail it contains is to be found almost no where else on this scale.
