1939 TYDOL VEEDOL TIDE WATER ASSOCIATED Road Map WEST VIRGINIA MARYLAND DELAWARE Handsome fold-out Tide Water Associated Oil Company highway map of Virginia. Maryland, Delaware, and West Virginia, printed more than 74 years ago. This map opens to 20" x 27" and has great detail on old road alignments. With cartography by H.M. Gousha. On the reverse side there are inset plans of Washington, D.C. and the greater New York City area, along with a map of the principal routes across New Jersey to the New York World's Fair. The map was distributed by the Tide Water Associated Oil Company in 1939 to promote its Tydol gasoline and Veedol motor oil. It is dated in the legend. And the code number in the lower margin is 12-M. Condition: This map is in excellent condition, bright and clean. With no marks. Rips, or tears. Rare, Large Antique 1708 Moll Map of Virginia and Maryland
Herman Moll was a Dutch Émigré to London who became the foremost mapmaker in Great Britain in the early 18 th century. He published atlases and loose maps which were prized for being very accurate. He was proud that so many mapmakers from England and the Continent copied his maps to generate their maps of the same area. Although most of his maps were of Great Britain his also published maps of the British colonies in America. This is one of those maps. The map itself features original color. It is large. Measuring over 8 inches by over 12 inches. It is matted and the matt measures almost 13 inches by 16 inches. The focus of this map is“The Great Bay of Chesapek” which along with the numerous rivers which empty into it were the highways to the English colonial settlers. Paved Roads, Mileage, Index of Towns, designed and published in Denver and Chicago by the Clason Map and Publishing Company. Although there were some earlier regional automobile touring books. Often with more text than maps, Clason is noted as publishing the first nationwide Auto Touring Atlas in 1923, in the format as we basically know it today. Clason continued to publish his auto atlases until 1931 when the business folded during the Great Depression. There is a copyright of 1830 on the title page. The map is not mounted nor matted, being sold as a single sheet as seen in the first pic with a centerfold as issued. A very nice early auto touring map that would frame up nicely for the antique car enthusiast or maybe great for a road trip if you can still find the routes, like Route 66. There are two maps printed back to back on one sheet so you would have to choose one side if framing. Size: The map image measures approximately 11 by 14 inches on a 12 by 16 1/4" page with a margin all around for matting as seen in the pic. Condition: It is in Good condition for its age with overall very light tonal ageing and a centerfold as issued. Basically as seen in the pics. There is some very minor wear and a bend on one edge, slight browing, otherwise it is very clean and would frame up well, see pics for more on condition. The pics are of the actual map.
