Beautiful vintage 1947 World Book Encyclopedia map Louisiana colorful art LOOK!
This is a map of Louisiana from the limited printing of the 1947 post-war edition of the World Book Encyclopedia. It Is really a pretty map; the colors are bright. The printing is crisp, and it is in great condition. This map is a 2-page spread disbound from the encyclopedia. It was tipped in using a separate little tongue of paper, so the map itself was not cut as it was removed. There is a crease down the center where it was folded in the book. The map was a little too big to fit on my scanner, so not all of it is shown in the scan. It has a white border all the way around it. The map is 9 1/2 inches by 13 1/2 inches. The altitude is color-coded, from green for the lowest altitude through yellow and orange to red for the highest altitude. I don't know much about maps, so I don't know how this one was made. It has an old-fashioned ... morelithographed look to it, but I think I can see dots when I look at it through a magnifying glass. On the back of the map Louisiana towns are listed with their location and population(circa 1947) This is such a nice-looking map! It would look great framed. Cartographer: Alvin Jewett Johnson(September 23. 1827- April 22, 1884) was a prolific American map publisher active from 1856 to the mid-1880s. Johnson was born into a poor family in Wallingford, Vermont where he received only a based public education. He is known to have worked as school teacher for several years before moving to Richmond, Virginia. Johnson got his first taste of the map ... morebusiness and a salesman and book canvasser for J. H. Colton and company. The earliest Johnson maps were published with D. Griffing Johnson(no clear relation) and date to the mid-1850s, however it was not until 1860 that the Johnson firm published its first significant work, the Johnson's New Illustrated(Steel Plate) Family Atlas. General Description: 1. Strikingly interesting and highly detailed map. Original hand coloring. The map depicts in great detail all of the geographical information known at the time the map was published. Note that many geographical details have changed since the map was published and were not accurate compared to today's modern maps because things were fully discovered and accurately mapped yet. Map symbols and details include individual towns. Rivers, lakes, bays, harbors, islands, mountains, forests, roads and other important places as shown on the map in this listing. 2. This is a 1931 map of Louisiana. It is from a scarce Cram's Atlas. The map measures 11.25 X 15 inches. It is in near mint condition showing only minor handling. Buyer will get a printed out page size copy of the index page. This is superior to any"Certificate of Authenticity" which are normally printed out on the sellers own computer. We send this to prove map was extracted from this extremely rare atlas and to help with insurance appraisals as the map will surely increase in value. There are a few reasons this map is rare. And more difficult to obtain than a Cram's map of the late 1800's. In 1931 the United States and the World was in a catastrophic depression. Thus Cram's did not print as many, and very few people had the money to buy this atlas. 1943 Vintage State Map of Louisiana and Maine
Dimensions: 16x12in or 41x31cm. This is an original antique double sided page or leaf from the 1943 WWII Wartime published Encyclopedia Britannica Atlas. Please note that this is not a lot for two separate images but rather this is a page with two sides. Each with a map of it's own. There are some condition issues with this map: minor discoloration along the page edges and brittle paper. No major tears or creases or holes. It is in largely Good to Very Good condition. Given it's age. On one side is a very handsome map of Louisiana. With it's sprawling Mississippi River delta, and handsome Gulf Coast. It's various parishes are clearly labelled, as are the coastal and river area bayous and swamps. This features a very nice medium to large inset on the upper right corner. This features New Orleans, Baton Rouge and the surrounding ... morevicinity. This has a closer view of the area parishes, and a greater resolution for Lakes Maurepas and Pontchartrain. Immediately below the inset is a listing of the states then railways. On the other side is Vacationland itself: Maine. It's counties are lined and labelled nicely. And it's rocky Atlantic coast is dotted with numerous small towns. Equal in visual appeal to Louisiana on the other side, this is one of the nicer folios from the collection, though with very different options on either side. This is a delicate map that needs to be handled carefully and should be stored flat or framed under glass. It will be shipped flat and protected with stiff cardboard and labelled not to be bent.
