An ORIGINAL antique 1757 French map of LOUISIANE from L'HISTOIRE GENERALE DES VOYAGES. J. N. BELLIN was the official engraver to the Marine at the time and produced a number of the maps published in L'HISTOIRE. Possibly the most accurate map of the region at the time it shows scores of settlements. Forts, and Indian Villages along the coast and inland of what is now the Southeast from the Atlantic Coast to west Texas. A number of Indian Tribes are named as well including the APACHES, CHICACHAS, TCHATAS, and CHERAQUIS. Note from the photos that the date 1757 is printed in the legend. Note also that the map has significant old damage from bookworm moths. The first 4 pictures are taken with a plain white background while the last picture is taken with a dark background to illustrate the damage. A double-sided page with boldly colored maps of Louisiana on one side and Kentucky on the other side. From an atlas by the renowned George F. Cram Company. Most antique and vintage maps have subdued shades. But these maps have rich colors that will really stand out framed. Because the maps are printed back to back. Only one can be displayed at a time. An original page from a 1960s atlas. Not a reprint or copy. Condition: Very good. The pages was just a bit big for the scanner. So part of the margin does not show in the image. For over 50 years, Mitchell his son's and their successors were the most prominent cartographical ... morepublishers of maps and atlases in the United States. Samuel Augustus Mitchell was born in Bristol. Connecticut on March 20, 1792. His father emigrated from Scotland in 1773. While little is know about his early schooling, it is know that Mitchell found the quality of early geography text books to be lacking, and determined that he would write and publish better works. This decision led him to relocate to Philadelphia in 1829 or 1830, which was then the center of commercial publishing in America. Mitchells first cartographic work was the re-issue of Anthony Finleys New American Atlas in 1831. A work first issued by Finley in 1826, in response to Henry Schenk Tanners monumental work of the same title, issued in serial format from 1818 to 1822 and as a complete work from 1823 onward. While the map content in Mitchells edition of the New American Atlas are same as Finleys edition, each map has been significantly improved and revised, primarily with the addition of new owns and roads. This is especially true in the South and West. Finley had originally collaborated with D.H. Vance and J.H. Young in the preparation of the maps. Vances name is removed from the Mitchell edition. This is one of the rarest maps depicting parts of the United States that you will ever find! Note that I sold an 1842 Arrowsmith Republic of Texas map for $20.000 and that is the going price for that Texas map from others as well because of the extreme rarity of finding those maps. I have sold many other Republic of Texas maps for many, many thousands of dollars. I reference this because I my Carey Missouri Territory map is easily far more rare than the Arrowsmith Texas map. Relatively speaking they made thousands of the Arrowsmith Texas map and only a small number of the Carey Atlas that this Missouri Territory map is from, so I have priced this map ... moreaccordingly. To my knowledge I am also the only one selling this is offering a map like this anywhere. This individual map is from the highly sought after and almost nonexistent 1814 edition of Carey’s General Atlas which was the first edition to use standard outline hand color. Carey first published the General Atlas in 1796 with several updates through the early 19th century. But it wasn’t until the 1814 edition that the plates went through a major revision. This revision included updates based upon the discoveries of Lewis& Clark, and features many important engravings west of the Appalachian mountains including Tennessee. Mississippi Territory. Louisiana and Missouri Territory beyond Louisiana. Mathew Carey was a seminal figure in early American publishing. Establishing the first publishing firm to specialize in cartography and issuing the first atlas devoted exclusively to American maps. The map is 2 sided and either side would frame and display beautifully, one side is Georgia and Alabama, with text at bottom and an engraving. The map has a few stains, mostly at bottom. Either the whole sheet or just the map could be framed. Reverse is Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas, also detailed, with a few stains at lower right, and a light stain at left. Morse was a highly regarded mapmaker of this period, well known for the beauty, accuracy and quality of their maps. The size of the map is 9.5" by 12" Rare. Description: This scarce map by Giambattista Albrizzi is a curious and somewhat retrogressive 1740 Italian variant on Delisle's 1718 map of Texas. Louisiana, Florida, and the southeastern British coastal colonies. Roughly following the topical model as laid down by Ortelius in 1584, this map is centered on the Mississippi River and covers from the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic and from the latitude of Philadelphia to Panuco(Mexico) and the Bahamas. Many of the cartographic elements here are curiously antiquated having been updated by Delisle in his 1718 map- suggesting that Albrizzi must have either had an earlier variant of Delisle's map ... morein hand when this map was composed or, more likely, chose to'update' the Delisle map with other outdated sources. One such example is the curious half-moon shaped lake at the northern terminus of the Apalachicola River. This lake appeared in some early French maps but by 1740 had largely been abandoned as unlikely by most cartographers. This is also one of the last published maps to incorporate John Lederer's c. 1670 nomenclature in Carolina- including the'Deserto Akenatzy' the'Pinnura cooperta d'acqua' and the'Lago Grand' a vestigial variant on the apocryphal'Great Lake of the American Southeast' Throughout the map cities and fortifications are rendered pictorially in the early 18th century European fashion. In particular, St. Augustine is presented as a mighty fortification. Other cities so rendered include Philadelphia, Charleston, Panuco, and(curiously) several Mohawk villages in Virginia. Smaller towns and American Indian villages are presented as churches. The political divisions presented here are also of exceptional interest. The cartographer limits the British colonies to a narrow band of land to the east of the Appalach

Pellet, Geneva, 1780 We are pleased to offer this scarce and historically important original map of what would become the southeast and midwest United States compiled by the French cartographer Rigobert Bonne(1727-1795) for the atlas volume that accompanied the profoundly influential Histoire philosophique et politique. The map provides a fascinating snapshot of this territory the year before the Articles of Confederation were formally ratified by all thirteen states. Bonne succeeded Bellin as Chief Royal Hydrogapher at the Depôt de ... morela Marine in 1773 and while his principal focus was on the production of marine charts, he also published general atlases throughout his career. One of the very first atlases with maps carrying the name of the newly formed United States, the maps for Raynal's atlas put special emphasis on the nascent nation- still engaged in the Revolutionary War when the map was published. While Raynal's sympathies were with the Americans fighting for independence. He was deeply critical of the acceptance of slavery in the United States. To get a sense of Raynal's rhetoric on the subject of slavery we present an excerpt in translation from the French original: The sacrilegious yoke of oppression shall be broken as the Negro slaves lack only a chief. Sufficiently courageous to lead them on to vengeance and slaughter. Spanish, Portuguese, British, French, Dutch- all these tyrants will become the victims of fire and sword. The plains of America will voraciously soak up the blood which they have long awaited, and the bones of so many wretched victims, heaped upon one another during so many centuries, will leap for joy.
