A mint julep is traditionally made with four ingredients: mint leaf, bourbon, sugar, and water. Traditionally, spearmint is the mint of choice used in Southern states, and in Kentucky in particular. The mint julep originated in the southern United States, probably during the eighteenth century. U.S. Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky introduced the drink to Washington, D.C. at the Round Robin Bar in the famous Willard Hotel during his residence in the city.4] The term"julep" is generally defined as a sweet drink, particularly one used as a vehicle for medicine. The word itself is derived from the Persian word گلاب(Golâb) meaning rose water. The middle page was a foldout of the 1856 Boston Fair, but half of the foldout is gone. The back page is a spectacular steam frigate engraving of the Merrimac, 11" x 15" The Kentucky article gives a short coverage of the state when there were 1.000,000 people living there. 37,680 square miles of blue grass. The article describes its choice location. The varied woodlands, the fertile soils, its staple products, trade ... morewith New Orleans and other topics in vogue in 1856. The Stephen Foster song"My Old Kentucky Home. GoodNight! was written originally about this time(1853) Winner receives a newly printed copy of the Steven C. Foster illustrated song with the words used in 1888. When the Ticknor and Company published this book in Boston. Lavish illustrations by Marry Hallock and Charles Copeland. In 1934. When the Assembly wanted to make this song the Kentucky State Song, they had to first revise out some objectionable words about the slaves- which you get to see in this older version. 1913 Woodford County Kentucky Bar Association Unger Bros Sterling Silver Pitcher
For your consideration is this stunning 1913 Unger Bros. Sterling Silver 2 1/2 quart engraved pitcher. The award piece is beautifully engraved with"PRESENTED BY THE Members OF THE Woodford County Bar 1913" We acquired thi s from a Woodford County. Kentucky estate and it has been very well cared for. The pitcher measures approx. 9 1/2" tall, 5 1/4" across the opening(6 5/8" across the opening to the point on the spout) and weighs a substantial 665 grams! It has the appropriate maker and sterling hallmarks on the bottom and the item is solid sterling silver(not weighted) The piece has a small ding just to the right of the engravings and a few other very minor marks that were too small to show up on the pictures but it is in otherwise excellent condition and really shows nicely! No international sales For sale is a vintage Gilbey's gin bottle in the 1/2 pint size. Try to find another listed or sold on Ebay. This bottle is SCARCE! The labels show wear. The tax stamps are in place but do show wear. The Kentucky tax stamp is in place, but again is worn. Please look at the pictures, they are an accurate representation of condition. Fantastic Colors. 1930s Kentucky Bow Tie Quilt. Hand Quilted. Good Condition
I haven't seen many older quilts with chartreuse as the primary color! I was especially surprised to find this one from a rural estate sale in Green County Kentucky. It probably dates to the 1930s or possibly the 1940s. The size is 74 x 62 inches The backing looks and feels like bleached feed sacks and this fabric is turned forward and stitched to form the binding. The batting is thin. In addition to the solid chartreuse fabric. For the bow tie squares the quilter used a wide assortment of bright solid colors and prints that likely originated as feed or flour sacks. Hand quilted with a neat average of 7 SPI. The quilt is in good condition with no tears or holes or dark stains. There are some spotted areas on back and a few small light spots on front. This quilts was used and washed over the years so there is a little fading to some of ... morethe colors. And some missing stitches. But this quilt remains a sturdy and beautiful county quilt
