This rare and interesting map shows a HUGE DAKOTA TERRITORY and the recently formed TERRITORIES of IDAHO. MONTANA, and WYOMING which were carved out of an even LARGER IDAHO TERRITORY in 1864. The map shows the old route of the PONY EXPRESS which was discontinued in 1861 after the completion of a Transcontinental Telegraph Cable. The map also shows the UNION PACIFIC TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD under construction at the time. The map shows the rail line completed as far west as EVANS PASS WYOMING and shows the surveyed route west of there. The railroad would be completed a year later in 1869.
