No repairs or reinforcements present. light staining at the folds. An attractive and influential world map from one of the leading cartographers of the 18th century. This map closely follows the second state of de l’Isle's world map of 1700. With several interesting alterations. In North America, the Missouri has now been named. The Rocky Mountains appear, and the course of the Rio Grande(Rio Bravo) is shown extending due north through the mountains. In Africa, the Niger is now separated from the Senegal River(but it’s correct course and outlet remain unknown. To the south we see Lake Maravi, an early interpretation of the great lakes of East Africa. In Asia, Japan is still incorrectly attached to Yeço(Hokkaido) and to the mainland, but New Guinea is now separated from Australia. Several of the voyage routes found on the 1700 map have been replaced with the more recent routes of Halley(1700) the St. Louis(1708) and the St. Antoine(1710) I am not a specialist map dealer. But this was examined prior to framing. It has not been trimmed and there were no reinforcements or tears whatsoever. It is dated 15 Avril, 1720. I can provide any additional information necessary- webcam inspection, or detailed photos upon request. I paid $1600 for this map in 2002. See Shirley 603. Covers the mid-section of Africa roughly from the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic eastward to the Red Sea and the horn. Extends southward as far as modern day Tanzania. Full of curious and often spurious information. Identifies the kingdoms of the Axuxmites in modern day Ethiopia. As well as the Nubians, the Amanites, and many other mysterious peoples. In the west the map, the Niger River begins and ends without a source or oceanic outlet. Further east, the map follows the course of the Nile river southward, past the lands of the Elephantophagi, to two mysterious lakes. These great lakes, at the foot of the mountains of the moon, were part of a long enduring myth in African cartography that dates to the works of Claudius Ptolemy. In fact, though issued nearly 1600 years after Ptolemy’s death, most of the information here is based directly on his work. Cartographically this map is very similar to Culver’s map of the same name issued in 1736. Size: Printed area measures 8.25 inches high by 12.25 inches wide. Condition: Very Good condition. Particularly at edges and, when the map is folded up, the item shows bumping at the corners and edges. The edges of the map have some tears. There are holes at some of the intersections of horizontal and vertical folds. There are brown marks on rear of map at most of the folds. Obviously the holes affect the map itself as do the slight brown fold marks. I think the item is G+ possibly. I hope the photographs are clear enough. WWI Map III Battle Mazurian Lakes 1914 German Russian Vol I pg 49 Ludendorff
This framed battle map came from an auction in Vermont. I believe it to have been an insert in a book at one time. Possibly from Ludenforff's Own Story by Quarter-master General Erich von Ludendorff. I am unsure how old the map is. It is Map III, The Battle at the Mazurian Lakes, 1914(Vol. I, page 49) copyright Harper& Brothers. If my research is correct, This battle took place from September 9 through September 14, 1914 in Eastern Prussia- Eastern Front, between the Russian First Army(commanded by Paul von Rennenkampf) and the German Eighth Army(led by Paul von Hindenburg and Erich Ludendorff) The map shows the German advances and attacks, direction of German cavalry advances and the Russian positions and rallying points. The maps are dated between the years 1904- 1905. Each map was designed to be folded to about 5” x 9” and stored in a box of other maps. This comes from a lot of soil maps retired by the University of Minnesota. Each map is in decent shape and any defects are attempted to be noted by the photo. If you have any questions. Please ask. This auction is for a soil map of: Cleveland Ohio Each map is roughly 3’ x 4’ or more depending on the size of the county represented. The maps are dated between the years 1904- 1905. Each map was designed to be folded to about 5” x 9” and stored in a box of other maps. This comes from a lot of soil maps retired by the University of Minnesota. Each map is in decent shape and any defects are attempted to be noted by the photo. If you have any questions. Please ask. Some maps do have small tears resulting in a“star shape” between the creases of the folding. But this does not mean any paper or information is lost.
