1782 Uncommon Bowles Map of Carlisle, Lakes Roads
1782 Bowles Map- Untitled Carington Bowles was a very successful English publisher of maps and prints during the latter part of the eighteenth century. Not much of his output was genuinely original and he inherited or acquired a lot of material from earlier cartographers. One of his publications was"Bowles Post-Chaise Companion" a small compendium of road maps which updated the earlier work of Ogilby. Bowen, Senex and Gardiner. This work is fairly hard to find. This attractive map of the main road from Garstang in Lancashire to Carlisle comes from a 1782 edition of"Post-Chaise Companion" It includes the county seat of Lancaster as well as Kendal. Shap and Penrith on the edges of the Lake District. It also lists a plethora of businesses that cater to the tourists in such cities like Aitkin. Brainerd, Bemidji, Cass Lake, Backus, Pequot Lakes, Isle, Princeton, Walker and others. The map is about 32 by 24. A few of the creases are torn open but the map is in piece. It should be mounted. This would be a great attraction if framed and put in a resort, restaurant or office. 1781 Bonne Map- Partie Occidentale du Canada Rigobert Bonne was the fortunate successor to J.N. Bellin as the official hydrographer/chartmaker to the French navy and. Like his predecessor, used the position for furtherance of his private atlas publications. Both Raynal's'Atlas de toutes les parties connues du Monde' of 1780-81 and the'Atlas Encyclopaedique' of 1787-88 owe much to the massive map resources of the French naval ministry. This map is from Raynal's'Atlas de toutes les parties connues du Monde' This map of Canada is the most accurate of its time. However the Great Lakes have not been corrected in as far as the fictitious islands in Lake Superior placed by Bellin are still there. Canada at this time referred to the colonies of Upper Canada and Lower Canada(later to become Ontario& Quebec. The ... moreAtlantic area and area to the west of Lake Superior were separate colonies or Hudson Bay Company land. Bonne also shows vestiges of Lahontan's'Riviere Longue' in a chain of lakes and rivers to the west of Lake Superior.
