Up for auction is an old map of Georgia made by the American Oil Company- It is in good condition with no rips. Tears, bends, or creases, writing or marks- I can’t seem to find a copyright date on it. So I’m not sure how old it is- It has been packed up in smoke free storage since 1981. It is a pocket map that is titled"Latest Complete Map of Georgia Showing Distances, Congressional Districts, Electric Lines and Principal Auto Roads. It was issued with compliments by the W. E. Cody Co. WECCO) Automotive Equipment 1236-43 1st Ave. 106-108 13th Street, Columbus, Georgia. Phone 426. On the cover in pencil is written W.M. Acree Camilla, GA. The map will be shipped folded in its original pocket folder. Size folded measures 6 5/8 x 3 1/4 in. 16.8 x 8.0 cm) Unfolded size measures roughly 33 x 26 in. 84.0 x 64 cm) In the upper corner is a small map of Georgia with a soil legend. The larger map is on a scale of 13 miles to 1 inch. The map legend also identifies cities by population range and county seat. The automobile roads ... moreare shown in green. Condition is near mint. All of the edges are crisp. No marks, stains, or creases other than folds. Unfortunately, the age of the paper makes it somewhat fragile so there is are two tears on the right margin that do not affect the map image. There is also a whole in the center fold from unfolding. These could be easily repaired if the map were permanently kept unfolded or matted and framed. It is a great old map and quite rare. The map is from a large collection of postcards. An ORIGINAL antique 1757 French map of CAROLINA and GEORGIA from L'HISTOIRE GENERALE DES VOYAGES. J. N. BELLIN was the official engraver to the Marine at the time and produced a number of the maps published in L'HISTOIRE. Possibly the most accurate map of the region at the time it shows settlements along the coast and inland as far as the Tennessee River. Note from the photos that the date 1757 is printed in the legend. Note also that the map has significant old damage from bookworm moths. The first 4 pictures are taken with a plain white background while the last picture is taken with a dark background to illustrate the damage. Otherwise the paper is still supple with no stains and the original plate impression around the entire periphery. On the coast of Georgia, printed more than 176 years ago. This map was published by Edmund and George W. Blunt in the 13th edition of The American Coast Pilot. New York, 1837. The Blunts were among the earliest surveyors of the U.S. coast line, in many instances preceding the official surveys of the young government. The map was engraved by William Hooker and includes a compass rose and mileage scale. The geographic coverage includes the southern tip of Sapelo Island. Pelican Shoals, the Darien River, and Marsh Island. The map gives soundings and indicates tidal flow. As well as locating mud flats, oyster banks, hammocks, breakers, sand beaches, and bottom conditions. This map is in superb condition. The paper is a fresh as the day it was publsihed Caucasus- l ocated on the peripheries of Turkey. Iran& Russia the region has been an arena for political, military, religious, and cultural rivalries and expansionism for centuries. Ancient kingdoms of the region included Armenia, Albania, Colchis& Iberia among others. By the time of this fourth printing. Both Fries and the original printer, Johann Grüninger had died, and the wood-blocks had found their way into the ownership of Melchior and Gaspar Trechsel. For this edition. The brothers employed Michael Servetus(burned at the stake for Heresy in 1553 due to derogatory comments in this atlas re: Palestine) to re-edit the text written by Wilibald Pirckheimer for the 1525, edition.
