Atlantic Ocean) Issued London: c. 1785-90; by Alex. Hogg. Fine original antique engraving. Made approximately 220 years ago. Printed in 18th century England. On quality hand-made rag paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. Created to illustrate a voyage of exploration and discovery across the world to the Southern Ocean and Pacific region. In the 18th century. Engraved illustrations such as this one were the primary method by which a person could see images of far away and exotic places. Voyages of discovery were then popular topics of discussion and men such as Dampier and Capt. Cook were heroes of their time. These"popular" types of prints were ... moreoften sold individually and as part of illustrated travel accounts. All of which are now scarce and valuable today. They are much sought after as a visual record of a bygone era and are great conversational items once framed for display. When you stop to consider their age and the fact they are original engraved works of art. It's amazing how affordable they actually are. What is also very interesting is that many of these views were continually re-engraved over time. So that while titles may be identical, in fact the engraved plate may be an entirely different one. This means there are likely numerous variants for each image, something which will reveal itself with close comparision between the prints. In Good+ or better condition. Some light small staining, minor paper wrinkling and age wear, most of which is visible in the photos[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually attractive. A pleasing impression of an interesting 18th century engraved image. Well worthy of display. Any small defects along the sheet edges and in the margins may be seen in the photos. This is another fantastic RARE Antique Map from our Father's Collection. I am not a map expert. But did do some internet research. This map appears rare as I could not find another. Only ones in archives or reproductions. In reading about A.D. Bache I found that his maps/surveys were a very important part leading up to the Civil War. This specific Map of Charleston Harbor(Ft. Sumpter) etc. is mentioned as possibly the most important survey done of coastal South Carolina& Georgia prior to Civil war. A couple of short edge tears, bent corners and a 3 inch separation along the bottom of the centerfold, otherwise the map image is clean of any distracting spots or stains and would frame up nicely.
