It was published by the US Coastal Survey Office for House of Representative as Ex. Doc. No. 26. 32d Congress, 2d Session Sketches Acompanying Report of Coast Survey. 1851. A copy of the Index page with the date and publishing details is included for authenticity. It has a date of 1851 printed on the map. It is being sold as a single sheet not matted nor framed. As seen in the main pic. A large mapfocused on New Jersey and New York City area including Staten Island, Delaware River, Philadelphia and other places. Interesingly Sandy Hook is shown as an island at this time. Nice accurate detail of the coast line for the period. Size: The image area measures 19 by 23 inches on a 20 by 24" page as seen in the main pic. Condition: It is in Very Good condition for its age. Espeically for a folding map. It is blank on the reverse with multiple folds as issued, basically as seen in the pics. There is one short tear of about an inch along the edge of a fold and the bottom margin was clipped as issued for folding into the publication. Otherwise it is very clean on still very pliable paper. There is some light browning along the folds that is accentuated in the pics, which is not very noticeable on the actual map, see the detail pic. The pics are of the actual map. It operated independently until 1991. When it was acquired by the Canadian Pacific Railway. It served for decades as the primary bridge line between New York and Montreal. For auction is a brochure issued by the D&H in the 1940s. It provides general information about the D&H. Its service area, and its principal freight commodities. One page has a picture. Characteristics and service information about the"Stourbridge Lion" The first locomotive used by the D&H in 1829. Another full page profiles the"L. F. Loree" An ... morearticulated steam engine introduced by the D&H in 1933. There is a page profiling three main industries served. Chateaugay Ore and Iron(Lyon Mountain. NY) Hudson Coal(Scranton. PA) and Chazy Marble Lime(Chazy. NY) The D&H owned non-rail properties. And there are photos of the Hotel Champlain near Plattsburgh(NY) the Fort William Henry Hotel at Lake George(NY) and the Champlain Transportation Company. The oldest steamboat line in the world. The jewel of this brochure is a full-page map showing the D&H's trackage. Which ran from Montreal. Quebec, Canada in the north through New York State to Owego and into Pennsylvania to Wilkes-Barre. There was also a branch into Vermont. Ending in Rutland. D&H trackage is shown in red. Other railroads are noted in black. This publication measures appx 8x4 inches folded and opens to appx 23x12 inches and is printed on a very heavy paperstock. It is in fair-good condition. Even considering that it is more than 60 years old. There is no writing or marking. No spills or stains. There is a long tear along the fold line that is close to severing one page from the brochure, and two small horizontal tears stem from this fold line; but

Ebeling was a German who undertook and exhaustive study of America. Which became a serial publication. Sotzman was selected to engrave maps of the United States. After only 10 maps the projected was aborted making these maps among the scarcest of all state maps according to Manasek.
